Reached Aggregate Loan Limit

Hello, so I've got a situation going on. Just discovered that I'm close to reaching my aggregate loan limit (I'm undergrad with 2 semesters left to graduate)...Technically, I'm a senior but I've had several bad semesters which required me to retake classes. The way I have my classes worked out now I'm planning to graduate (most likely will graduate) in 2 semesters (Spring 2014).

However, I'm scared that I won't be able to pay for it. The financial aid office is currently reviewing my account and they'll get back with me with details. Basically, my question is: is there any possibility that my university will give me money for these last 2 semesters? What do I do? For those who've been in my position, what did you do?? Kinda scared....

I appreciate any and all feedback that I get. I would like to get a response from kelsmom...I've read that you're an expert in this field. Please help me out.

Thank you so much.

How much sub have you borrowed? How much unsub? Are you independent for 2013-2014? Have you had any additional unsubsidized loans due to parent PLUS denial?

If you don’t know the answers to any of the above, go to [National Student Loan Data System for Students](http://www.nslds.ed.gov) and find out — you will see all of your loans there. Let me know the answers & I will give you advice.

Direct Stafford Sub borrowed: $14,500
Direct Stafford Unsub borrowed: $12,000
Stafford Sub: $3,500
Total: $30,000
I’m not independent and I think I got the Stafford Sub for $3,500 when the Parent PLUS was denied…I’m not sure though.

Thanks.

Let’s try it this way … give me the amounts and the loan period for each amount. That way, I can tell whether it was additional unsub due to PLUS denial. The reason I want to know is because any additional unsub due to PLUS denial does not count toward your dependent undergrad limit of $31,000.

Ok, the nslds website it only gives us the loan date so that’s what I’ll tell you.

1 DIRECT STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED $2,000 08/27/2012
2 DIRECT STAFFORD SUBSIDIZED $5,500 08/27/2012
3 DIRECT STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED $1,000 01/17/2012
4 DIRECT STAFFORD SUBSIDIZED $2,250 01/17/2012
5 DIRECT STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED $2,000 09/07/2011
6 DIRECT STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED $1,000 09/07/2011
7 DIRECT STAFFORD SUBSIDIZED $2,250 09/07/2011
8 DIRECT STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED $4,000 09/08/2010
9 DIRECT STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED $2,000 09/08/2010
10 DIRECT STAFFORD SUBSIDIZED $4,500 09/08/2010
11 STAFFORD SUBSIDIZED $3,500 01/19/2010

Hopefully I’ve provided what you were asking for… Thanks.

Yes, I have what I need …
Your $4000 loan on 9/8/10 is additional unsub due to parent PLUS denial. I know this because you have your sophomore-level sub loan ($4500) and the $2000 dependent base unsub loan for that date. That means that the $4000 is additional unsub. It also looks like you have additional unsub due to parent PLUS denial in 2011-12. Between the September 2011 and January 2012, you received $4500 sub (sophomore level), $2000 unsub (dependent base allowed), and the other $2000 (from 9/7/11) must be additional unsub due to PLUS denial. If I am correct, you have borrowed the following:

Dependent undergraduate loan level: sub=$18,000; unsub=$6,000; total=$24,000.
Independent undergraduate loan level: Sub=$18,000; unsub=$12,000 (of which $6,000 is attributed to dependent undergrad loans and $6,000 is attributed to additional unsub due to parent PLUS loans); total=$30,000.

This means that you still have $31,000-$24,000=$7,000 left to borrow while you are dependent (of which up to $5,000 can be sub, since the subsidized aggregate limit for an undergrad is $23,000). The additional unsub is not counted toward dependent limits — it gets counted differently, and the independent loan limits are used when you add in those loans (the independent limit is $54,500).

Talk to your financial aid office and ask them to recompute your loan eligibility, removing the additional unsub.
