REACHES! Where should I apply early decision?

Hey- I'm looking for schools on the east or west coast (with a few acceptions). I was wondering if people had any suggestions for my reach schools. thanks a bunch.

GPA: 3.7 uw
SAT I: 620CR, 640M, 560W (i know, i know)
Courses: my school doesn't offer many AP classes, but I've taken all of the advanced that I'm eligible for.
Class rank: to 20th percentile -I know, but the 50th percentile at my school is a 3.0 and lots of the kids above me don't take any hard classes.

ECs:
Cross country running: 11, 12 -JV w/ a Varsity letter
Nordic skiing: 10, 11, 12- JV, most improved, was part of intense training program during the summers
Track: 10, 11: JV
Theater: LOTS of plays at great theaters in the area. Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night's Dream at my school, 4 years at acting conservatory
Choir: 10, 11, 12- Honors Choir, Voice lessons
Philosophy group: member 10, 11, 12
Young Democrats: 10, 11, 12. Founding member-10, Treasurer 10, 11, Co-President 12.
Straights and Gays for Equality: member 10, 11, 12
Student Council: 11, a class representative
*9th grade I went to a different school that didn't have many activities. no sports or theater or choir. I spent my time doing plays at local theaters.)

Jobs:
Fundraiser for Democratic National Committee for 1 summer
Park attendant for 1 winter (seasonal job)

Other:
I'm very skilled in foreign language. I spent a month this summer in Germany, and I spent a month last summer in France where I received a years worth of French Credit. I got an A- that summer (but I was the top in my class) and I did a summer immersion program the summer before for a month in which I also got a years worth of credit (I got an A).

For two years of High school my sick grandmother was living with us. She suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, and often times I was taking care of her. It was extremely hard on home and school life.

I was considering for reaches: Tufts, Middlebury, Colby, and Boston U
I would really like to go to a school that has some "prestige" behind its name.

Any other schools you would suggest? THANKS

PS. I want to study politics, international relations, philosophy, or foreign language

You should apply to a school ED only if it is your first choice, and you want to go there no matter what else happens in admissions.

If you want West Coast, do it! Why go East Coast, if you don't want to?

I would like either, really!

I want to apply ED to a school that would be tougher to get into, in order to raise my chances.

Would DEFINITELY NOT apply ED at this point because it doesn't appear you're POSITIVE as to where you want to go. ED is when you're absolutely sure that you will go to that school (& can afford it). Heck, it sounds like you haven't decided for sure whether you've decided which part of the US you want to study in. Give yourself more time & flexibility by using RD & keeping options open & researching more to find the right fit.

well I'm POSITIVE that I would go to Tufts or Middlebury if I was accepted to one of them. It's not as though I don't know what part of the country I'd like to be in! I'm just not that particular. I KNOW I don't want to be in the south and the majority of the midwest and other hick-states.

Although you allude to the idea that I haven't thought about this very much, you couldn't be farther from the truth.

I was just asking for suggestions for reach schools because I would like to use ED on a reach school! I don't want to apply ED to Tufts if I don't have a chance in hell. I'd like to use it on a school that I would be a reach but I'd still have a chance.

Instead of telling me what I already know about ED, could you give me some help with what I asked about? PLEASE.
:-(

What reaches do I have a chance at?

what school doyou go to?

I think you def. have a chance at Tufts and Middlebury...maybe you could use the fact that your grandma lived with you in an essay?

I go to school in a big public school in the suberbs of Minneapolis. Maple Grove Senior High.

You won't get into Middlebury, Tufts is a reach. BU is a good possibility.

ok. Thanks, bandit for your honesty. From the sound of it, I would probably like Tufts better anyway, but other people have told me I don't have a chance there either.

I'm taking the SAT II soon. To Middlebury I could submit 3 of those in lieu of the SAT I. If I get better scores on those, would I have a chance at Midd?

I love you all. Thanks.

I'm at wayzata

Tufts is a strange school.

In what way? It sounds pretty awesome to me... but I haven't visited yet. Too bad I don't have a chance in hell... :(

Whats your AIM?

k. I think I'll just aim for Tufts, then... even though I won't get in. arg. Any suggestions?

I think BU is your best strategy ED. Mid and Tufts seem unlikely.

damn. is there anything I can do to boost my chances at tufts?

Raise your SAT. And write a great essay.
