Well, we made two pages! ;-)

My mom said that homeschoolers are all rich and snooty. Do you think this is true?

Well, I don't think we're snooty, and I KNOW we're not rich! I can think of only one wealthier hser in our town--and they are hardly rich.

I know a LOT of the homeschoolers, and most are on the lower income side. Proportionately, I know about as many schooled snoots as homeschooled snoots. It sounds like your mother has encountered an odd sampling, I hope she's gets a chance to meet some of the rest of us.

Homeschoolers being rich? That's a new one!

Hope you don't mind a mom jumping in to the conversation? We live in Chicago, and many of the families in our homeschool group really struggle to make ends meet. On the other hand there are wealthy suburbs to the north of us, and when I visit the homeschool group up there, I hear from parents who think nothing of tossing around thousands for a program or class. So I'd guess that homeschoolers, like any other group, span the economic spectrum. Probably the zipcode of the home will be a good clue?

LSC-

I am another Chicagoan. :)

Last night, when someone heard I was homeschooled, he had the impression that I was a rich, spoiled brat. (Another stereotypical homeschooler from someone who knows nothing about homeschooling.)
This is quite strange to me. The few homeschoolers I know are not poor yet not wealthy, and they all are quite and polite. I think this generally desribes me pretty well, too.

Katharos,

It's strange to me too. I had no idea that "rich, spoiled brat" was an image people had of homeschoolers. I'd love to show them some of the kids I know. We've got a young man in our homeschool group teaching himself Japanese. His parents can't afford classes for him, but he isn't giving up, just taking matters into his own hands. There is a group of homeschooled teens who were meeting at the local Borders, and a social worker who had been shopping there approached the adult sponsor of the group, introduced herself and confessed she'd been curious and listened in to the group, and was impressed with the manner and content of the groups interaction. It was the first time she'd had a window into homeschooling, and she thought the kids were fantastic. My mom has been very ill this year, so ds is often on his own to study and do chores while I'm caretaking. I never have to worry, the work is always done by the time I get home, because he wants to make something of himself, and also understands that the family needs extra help right now. There are so many great kids who are homeschooling, it's a shame if people have a skewed view. I would be extremely proud if homeschoolers became known as the "quiet and polite" group. :-)
