Reactions to new President?

The letters to The Hook were often not very nice.

Madame president! Sullivan to take UVA reins | The Hook News Blog

I wouldn’t read too much into the comments on an anonymous forum (including this one). It seems to me that this is a pretty ho-hum, safe choice. The well-regarded provost of Michigan can obviously handle UVa administratively, and is familiar with all of the issues. The reaction of alumni that I know is very positive.

Probably She wear Blue color cloth. She never wear orange color shirt.
But She loves popcorn (Maize color ) especially when watching football game.
and guess what her best friend name is Ann.
We cheer her again

Go Blue!

Finally not another old, white man as president.

I was wondering how y’all would take all this. Personally, I welcome this change. As stated in this article, I think Terry Sullivan’s got the goods.

[New U-Va President Teresa Sullivan more than ready for the challenge](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/15/AR2010011501584.html)

I agree with you Globalist. I think she’s going to do a great job.

I don’t know why, but I have kind of a luke-warm feeling about her…
Cheers of optimism aren’t filling my psyche. Don’t know why.

So here’s something ridiculously superficial, but why not have a wish list?

Will she please get rid of the ridiculous “sea of orange” that Scott Stadium has become in the fall? Definitely prefer to see a return of Navy blue as the dominant color. Maybe since she comes from Michigan that could happen.

Orange is Va Tech. Orange is Syracuse. Orange is Florida. Orange is NOT UVa.

How about embracing the traditions of one of the nation’s oldest universities while at the same time growing its role as a nationally recognized bastion of higher education?

The Sea of Orange was a Groh thing, not a Casteen thing.

I hope she doesn’t herself with what people wear to football games. :)

Eh, orange doesn’t bother me so much. In the world of collegiate lacrosse, the “orange” schools tend to be the best: UVa, Princeton & Syracuse. Plus, the different shades of blue have been claimed by Duke and UNC. If we really want to stand out, perhaps bring back the ol’ jackets & ties to the football games. (Ah, those were good times.)

To Powderpuff’s point, I can see how one could have some apprehension with Terry Sullivan after 20 years with Casteen. Sullivan has no prior connection to UVa, while Casteen got his BA, MA & Ph.D. at Virginia and was the Dean of Admissions before becoming the President. I’ve wondered if the new president will “get” UVa. Wahoos are rabidly loyal to our alma mater – BEYOND sports. We literally revere the Grounds we walk on, and we honor Jefferson as a demi-god. The silver lining to me is knowing that so many professors and other faculty members who didn’t have a connection to UVa have come to the University, become one of us, and contributed positively to our community.

While UVa is similar academically and athletically with the other schools Sullivan has worked for (Michigan and Texas), on the social and historical fronts, UVa has more in common with William & Mary and old private universities. UVa has an amazing history with Thomas Jefferson, James Madison & James Monroe working to found the school. We’re much smaller than UMich and UT, and we’re known for our great student/teacher interaction. I hope Sullivan’s time getting her Ph.D. at UChicago will somehow help her to understand where we come from, so that the closeness of our community and the other special aspects about our school won’t be lost.

Thanks Globalist, your words were the ones I was searching for. She has no connection with UVA. Michigan is definitely not the kind of school I want, I didn’t even consider applying there. Oh, of course, many will tout the Michigan mystique, but no it’s not for me. I love the southern, historical, smaller, Jeffersonian academical atmosphere of UVA.
I have strong southern roots and I like it that way. I don’t know, something just rubs me the wrong way about this new President: too northern, no UVA connection, from really big schools (U of M, Michigan State), and she’s actually kind of old in her own career (60 years old). I’m a little sad to be honest. I know I’ll probably get some grief for this posting, but it’s an honest report from me, a UVA 3rd year student.
Oh, and Globalist, guys still wear jackets and ties to the football games :)

New Scott Stadium Song

In Old Charlottesville town there are men of great renown;
they are ever out to fight and win the game!
On the court or on the field there’s a will to never yield
and to bring our Teresa Sullivan ev’ry fame.
Here’s a university whose name will ever be
the greatest and the fairest in the land.
And we praise her far and near
with our voices strong and clear,
For we know wherever we go that none with her may stand.
Go Blue! Let’s go, Blue!
We’re here to cheer for you!
Go Blue! Let’s go, Blue!
No matter what the others have got,
they’ll never come up to you.
Go Blue! Let’s Go Blue!
We’re here to see you through.

Sullivan, Go Blue!

That’s my whole freakin’ point, “Go Blue” does not belong on Mr. Jefferson’s Grounds.

Somewhat concerned that she paid homage to the Athletics Department in her speech but said nothing about international.

Good point, elgordo, hey and I like your name.

From Governor Tim Kaine’s final State of the Commonwealth Address, January 13, 2010:

"And…I must take this opportunity to applaud the newly named president of the University of Virginia, Teresa Sullivan. The choice of a dynamic and experienced president to lead one of the world’s most important and historic universities is always worth celebrating. And what a wonderful thing to see a woman president at a University that did not even allow women as students when she began her own college education…

A second challenge is the need to keep our higher education system in the position of national pre-eminence that it currently enjoys. Fifty years ago, Virginia’s adult population received higher education degrees at less than half the national average. Today, we are well above the national average in the percentage of our citizens with a Baccalaureate degree, and we are the only Southern state that can make that claim. But, higher education attainment in Virginia has flattened out at about 40 percent.

While still good by American standards, we need to realize that the leading nations in the world are educating nearly 60 percent of their population with higher education degrees today. We have a huge gap that we need to overcome to maintain our strength in this important area. And we face an additional problem here – Virginia college tuition is now higher than national averages, effectively reducing access to many students who are most in need of educational advancement…"

And from TMCnews EDITORIAL: Short takes: Quick views of some of the week’s news.

"A new president for UVa Teresa Sullivan will be the eighth president to lead the University of Virginia, and the first woman to fill the role. We wish her well.

Sullivan brings solid academic and administrative credentials. She is the University of Michigan’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and also serves as its chief budget officer. In that post, she has learned to grapple with Michigan’s recession and its effect on higher education – a lesson she will find instructive in coming to Virginia.

UVa’s board of visitors expressed great confidence and enthusiasm for Sullivan’s knowledge and abilities. Her only drawback, it seems, is her lack of name recognition in Virginia. Hopefully, UVa alumni and students will in short course come to know Sullivan better, then welcome and support her in her new role…"

It’s smart of any organization to bring in people from outside the circle. Let’s not snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory here. Let the President get installed before we decide she’s not _____ enough for us. :)

There are plenty of faculty and administrators on Grounds who were bred and educated elsewhere. Diversity of thought and background is a strength.

You are right Dean J. I will follow your lead.
