1/98
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.5 Weighted
First Generation

Taking 8 IB classes this year; other than that, I'm a regular Ivy app (comm serv, president of various clubs, etc.)

I think you'll be in. Great stats all around. Are you applying ED? I'm applying ED to Princeton, but I'm really looking at others since my chances are slim.

I'm applying this year. It's my favorite school, but I just can't bring myself to apply ED. Better safe than sorry.

School: Public, mediocre high school in a small city, but I live ~15 miles away in "the sticks."
Profile: White, First generation, low income.
GPA: 3.9 UW, 4.5 W (9 APs including this year)
Rank: 1-2 of 250

SAT: 800 V 780 M
SAT II: 800 Writing, 800 American History, 650 Spanish, taking Lit. in Nov.
AP: Gov't-4, Chem-4, Language-4, US History-5

Worked at an Arby's from the beginning of 9th grade to the end of 11th. 15 hours a week during school, 30-40 during summer.
Worked at a restaurant since the beginning of last summer. 40 hours/wk in the summer, about 20/wk so far this school year.

My ECs aren't stunning but I've found four things that I really love and I think that the lack of the extra fluff on my application will be a positive thing. With working and school, I really don't have time to do anything I don't really want to. The problem is that I didn't get to start most of the things I've done until 11th grade when I bought my car. I live too far away from school to expect anyone to take me home, and my parents would be working after school.

Fingers crossed.

Willy,
Don't worry about the lack of EC's because you will get points for the fact that you are working demonstrates comminiment to something. Daughter was in the same position as she worked part time all through H.S. (she was committed to only 3 EC's but did them for her 4 years in H.S.)

Many people think that if they have a million AP's that is the way to get in, but it is the quality of the ECs not the quanitiy. Schools want to see a commitment to something over a period of time.

All the best (Did you try to make your pitch to any one to attend homecoming?)

Wow, my stats are eerily similiar to yours willywonka.

RD
Rank: 5/413 (50+ kids dropped out this year. Drat.)
GPA: 3.98 UW, 5.19 W (we have a weird scale with 5 for honors and 6 for APs)
SAT: 800 V 770 M
SAT II: 800 Histories, 800 Writing, 770 BioM
AP: 5 US, World, Bio, and Eng.
Insanely competitive public school optional program with a good record of getting kids to Ivies for both basketball (not me) and academics.

Much involvement in 3-4 major activites. Alas, not many leadership positions avaliable. Probably top-notch recs, decent essay.

Dartmouth is probably my top choice in terms of location and size. The only problem right now is the potential cost/loans since I'll likely need to go beyond undergrad.

Very impressive Vig, best of luck.

Sybbie, I haven't yet. Staying through homecoming and potentially through the DC concert would be a lot of time that I can't go to work and even some days that I'll miss school. I know that I have to expect to miss something if I want to visit, but I'm just not sure. Better decide soon, though; can you believe October is already over?

Yes, October is almost over and the big bonfire is tonight. Xan, help Willy out so that he can make it there for the concert :) I hear that the 08's are having a great time hosting the prospies.

Dartmouth is definitely my first choice, but like willywonka I'm uncomfortable with ED.

School: Competitive public school in small town
Rank: 3/340
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.4ish W
SAT: 790 M 770 V
SAT II: 800 Math IIc 800 Chem 790 Writing
AP: 5 Calc BC, Chem, US History
AIME: 4

Some solid EC's, national science olympiad medal, not much leadership (dang elections).

Expecting a good essay and greatish recs.

Since this thread self-defeating without some input from current students...

Weight/Unweight GPA: 4.69/3.98
Class rank: 3 of 485

SAT I: 800 Verbal/780 Math
SAT II: 790 Writing/770 Math IIC/760 Bio-M

National AP Scholar/AP Tests Taken: Euro History (5), CompSci A (5), CompSci AB (5), Bio (5), French (4), Calc AB (4), US History (5), English Comp (5), English Lit (5)

IB Full Diploma

Other junk:

-Asst. Feature Editor of student newspaper (3 journalism awards received)
-Vice Chair of Assisteens volunteer group (4 years membership)
-National Science Olympiad Championship 2003, 4th place 2004 (won 2 second-places in 2004 Nationals)
-3 Varsity letters (2 Cross-Country, 1 Track & Field)

Wow I feel like a pretentious pip-girl writing that all out.... ._. Remember in college, nothing you did in high school matters!

I am applying ED to Dartmouth this year. My stats are:

1600 SAT

SAT IIs: 790 US History

2/245 at a mediocre public HS

National Merit Commended Scholar

Awwww, I'm the dumbest one applying :(.

3.6 UW
23/275
1450
780 Writing, 770 Lit, 700 IC

Math team, Ice Hockey, Babysitting....all your normal stuff.

I wrote my essay about my ethical dilemma and choice not to apply to Harvard using 5-generation legacy status.

I hope I take it well when I don't get in.

Don't say that Elizabeth. You know you're better than that. Everyone has bad days though, so it's alright.

Your essay sounds fantastic, by the way. I love the subject matter. If you're not shy about others reading your work (I know I am), could you please email it to me? Not to judge it, just to read it.

Willywonka-

Thanks for the encouragement. I am a bit shy about having people read my work, but I'd be happy to let you read it after all admissions decisions are made. It's not that I don't trust you or anything, just that you can't be too careful :).

Elizabeth,

Don't worry about what any one writes concerning their stats. Remember what any school is looking to do is put together a class. As you have read before, almost everyone who is applying has grades/scores.

Every one will not be evaluated the same because all situations are not the same. You can only be evaluated in respect to what is offered to you. If some one has a full IB diploma (which apparently has been offered at Drownindreams school) that is the standard which they will be measured against. There will be an expectation that you take the most rigerous curriculum your school offers, if your school does not offer IB or AP it does not make you less of a candidate because your school does not offer them. My daughter went to a school that only offers 4 APs does not rank, has no val or sal designation, and is a happy 08 at Dartmouth.

After getting through that first hurdle which may will pass, they will look for traits for the incoming class: musicians, artist, good-deed doers, classics majors (depending on what the department the school is trying to build) What happened last year may not necessarily be what the school is looking for this year. You have thrown your hat in the ring, for the moment, that has to be enough. In the end you must trust that you will end up where you need to be.

All the best

Thanks Sybbie-

That really makes me feel better. By the way, did you know that I want to major in Classics, or is that just a really cool coincidence?

Cool coincidence, I just threw it out because my daughter is seriously thinking about becoming a classics major even though she is going to do the Pre-med track of courses. She wants desperately to do the greek study abroad.

Have you had an opportunity to stay overnight?

Here is an article from forbes that may help, it is kind of long, but really gives some good insight to the admissions process. take care.
