SO, I have some questions about Wesleyan. First, do you think applying from a parochial school would put me at a disadvantage, even though I am liberal, cuz they think i wouldnt be a good fit...which I am. Also, how do you think it compares with schools like brown, tufts, amherst (very different from wesleyan i think, but i like both), chicago, macalester, duke, and brandeis...all schools i am considering. I kind of rambled on, and I am not sure if i made sense, but please respond, thank u

There are dozens of parochial school kids in every Wesleyan class.

The competition:

Brown - the largest overlap by far among Wesleyan applicants. It's bigger, is five minutes from the downtown of a major city;PROS: similar freedom of course selection and laid back atmosphere; CONS: somewhat higher crime rate near campus; apathy is a big, hidden problem among upper classmen.

Tufts - similar sized campus with nearly three times as many students shoe-horned into it. Much more pre-professional than Wesleyan.

Amherst - historic athletic rival; superb academics; Wesleyan visitors are often surprised to find how boring Amherst is architecturally.

chicago - a sentimental favorite among a lot of Wesleyan faculty; not so much among students; not known for nudity, gays or anything else that's fun.

macalester - good solid, midwestern LAC; probably easier to get into than Wesleyan.

Duke - Have you read "I Am Charlotte Simmons"? A nerd nightmare.

Brandeis - What Wesleyan would look like if you flattened and carted away every single building constructed before 1956. The academics are pretty good. Again, easier to get into than Wesleyan.

thanx for replying.

brown: the bigger and ivy league version of Wes in my pt of view, basically i didnt like it too much becuz of its bigger size and its little ivy league superiority complex

tufts: a nice LAC which gd academics and pretty campus, ive heard some nice things abt its professors from some fds of mine from there

amherst: quite different from wes but equally strong, if not stronger, academically as wes. once one of my top choices, but then the boring guy from the admission office who came to my school to talk successfully prevented me from applying

chicago: a place for ppl who want to devote most of their time studying. its not THAT nerdy but it is nerdy as a matter of fact, but then our worlds do need some nerds once in a while, so thats the best place i can think of for nerds to become even more nerdy. but i heard the professors are superb and undergrads do get plenty of research opportunities.

macalester: a small, mid-west LAC with a nice intl studies program and very intl student friendly. though i might be ****ing a whole lota ppl off but it is not very hard to get into - esp if you're from certain schools. even the admission office says so, i mean, well, what more can i say.

brandeis - oops, dont know much abt this one.

Thanx again for reply. Also, I like Bard College in NY too. So far, Brandeis doesn;t seem too great. Brown sounds like a keeper and it seems similar to Wes. I think Mac is similar too and very liberal LAC. Tufts is good, local, but their admissions is unpredictable. I like Amherst open curriculum and seems terrific. I really only considered Chicago becuz of relatively high acceptance rate but i think i ruled it out now. How about ALfred U. for safety and BU. Keep replying you've been a great help u guys

anyone else wanna post lol

Brandeis- Very small university (3100 undergrads) with a campus that's got lots of green, but strange to ugly buildings. Awesome and passionate people with equally passionate professors. Known for being "too Jewish" but now has 2 classes under 50% and is non-sectarian. Very liberal and social justice oriented. Also has plenty of Green Day fans. =P

Bard is a sentimental favorite of mine. I liked their woodsy campus and Dutchess County location. Their president has been there since I was in college--and that's a long time. Seems to have come into a bit of money lately which has risen its profile somewhat (not that that was ever its main goal.)

A good safety if you are into the whole Brown-Wesleyan-Vassar continuum.

BTW, you should really be posting in the "CC Top Liberal Arts College" forum for Wesleyan--you'll get more responses there, IMO.
