Read my essay, please?

Hi, everyone!

I finally finished my common app essay; unfortunately, I'm not completely satisfied with it yet. English is not my first language, and writing is not my strong point. So, I was wondering if anyone is willing to read it and give me some suggestions. It currently contains about 1,200 words, which needs to be cut down to around 500 (due to the new word-limit). Just a few words per person can amount to a great number, so pleaseplease help!

Thanks so much :)

Sure, why not?

Thank you, I’ve PM’ed it to you!

You really did a good job of imagery and I could imagine the school right before my eyes. Really drive home the point about your parents taking all the risks, the sacrifices, suffering and how their actions have bettered you. Show your appreciation for their hard work. I only saw one line. When you asked “How can I connect this?”, I actually thought that it was well connected. Good point of your remembering where you came from in a sense. Out of 6, I would say a 4-5. Harvard has some truly remarkable writers that send in their essay. While your essay is well written, I can see that you need to drive home some points and stress certain things throughout your lifetime. You have a really good topic here, and some great imagery but there is something really missing in some instances. If you need a real detailed analysis and guidance, please let me know. Then again, I am no English teacher. Good Luck with your admissions into the school of your choice! P.S I could not see any trace of evidence leading me to believe that you lacked the vocab, writing fluency in your essay. You are a good writer.

Thank you, InterestedJunior! I agree with all the points you have made–I, too, feel like something is missing from my essay. I will try stressing the sacrifices my parents have made and see where that goes.
& about my writing, thank you. My major problem with essays is sounding too formal and not knowing how to put what’s on my mind into words well.

Sure, pm me. but I’m still having doubts on the 500 word limit…is it a limit or suggested length??

Thanks! & I’ve researched the same question…it’s a limit :frowning: Some threads I’ve read say the common app won’t cut you off at 500, but adcoms will notice the difference between 650 & 500…so you can go a few words over, but not too many.

I’d love to help! I’m not an English teacher, but I’m a decent writer who’s had a few publications and will give it my best shot.

Sent you a message!

I’ll read it !

Thanks, everyone :)
