I got suspended in 9th grade. Here is what I put in the part of the app that asks you to explain the circumstances. How bad do you think the suspension will hurt me?

I got suspended for 1 day in 9th grade for a combination of 2 incidents. First I'd gotten a reprimand for calling another student gay. I didn't mean it as an attack against his sexual orientation. Back in middle school "gay" had been more of a general insult meaning stupid or dumb, but the administrators told me it amounted to sexual harassment and I haven't repeated the mistake since. A couple weeks later I got in trouble for copying a rap song I read on an online forum to show to a classmate who had told me to write one as a joke. I thought it was humorous but it contained vulgar lyrics, and when a teacher saw it she reported me to my VP. The VP said that since I hadn't learned by lesson from the first incident, I would be getting suspended for a day. I would say that the first incident was the more serious one and that I got suspended for printing the rap because it was my second offense in a short period of time, but it probably wouldn't have got me suspended by itself. Admittedly I was rather stupid and immature back then, but I would say that I've grown up in the years since and have managed to stay out of trouble since then.

That sounds good to me. I don't think any sensible admissions person would reject you because of calling someone gay (in the stupid sense) or writing a few curse words.

Jeez, do you go to like, military school or something? I went to a fairly strict private school, and even the teachers said the F word on a regular basis. And I had to adjudicate (I guess, more like sit in on) on a judiciary hearing about 4 freshmen and 3 sophomores getting ****faced and none of them got expelled. Or suspended. I think they got off scot free, FOR UNDERAGE DRINKING, of all things. I think 1 or two of the sophomores got expelled, but only because they were the last two cases we heard, the hearing (there were 7 back to back, took like 4 hours, they should have paid us overtime) took like 4 hours, we were tired, and we weren't about to give the benefit of the doubt to the last two who lied thru their teeth, even at the hearing.

I can't believe you got suspended for that. In high school of all places. You might share a good laugh with the adcoms....

I don't think it'll hurt you...the adcoms will probably, worst case scenario, see it as freshman immaturity. Don't worry too much, I think you'll be fine. :) Good luck!!

I agree with futurenyustudent...I go to a CATHOLIC school and teachers swear...you would certainly not have been suspended for any of those things here (and we start at gr.7). In fact, they are everyday occurances. I would be angry if I were you -in no way did you have grounds for suspension.

I think colleges will take into consideration that you school admins are derranged. In uni you can swear, call names, or whatever you like and the profs won't care...so it shouldn't matter.

For those who don't know, this was trendy a few years back (I guess only in some areas), like a predessor to "random" -everything is "random," regardless of whether it actually is or not. Likewise, the term gay was misused and among middle school kids developed a kind-of alternative meaning.

even though I personally try not to say it, the word has developed into some sort of "cultural norm" to say gay as in, "lame, stupid." It doesn't really have much to do with hating gay people (I am completely for gay rights), it is just imbedded into our vocab for some reason (maybe this was the original intention, but over time it has become something very different). And people don't necessarily use it as an insult to a person; someone can refer to their broken pen as "gay," or the fact that they have to run 3 miles "gay," or the fact that they have a 10 page essay to write. etc. I don't think it's reasonable to be suspended for anything like that...adcoms will/should understand. One silly incident in 9th grade isn't going to be an auto-rejection.

That's just silly, but I guess it just depends on the teacher? My english teacher loves curse words, while my physics teacher nearly had a heart attack when I used the f word. I would understand your situation if I was an admissions person, especially since you haven't gotten in trouble since 9th grade.

yeah that's so silly. i know a kid who got suspended once, but he said some really rascist comments (he said that black people should still be slaves). asian ppl are probably the racistest people ever. :D

but now our school's got a new policy, if you don't wear ur ID tag for 8 days you get suspended for a whole WEEK for defiance!!
