Reading & Composition. Really a requirement?

Anybody in engineering also? On my telebears it says I need to enroll in a class. But the thing is I missed my entry-level writing requirement and I can't sign up for any of the classes to satisfy the R & C req. The earliest I can take a course is in the spring semester.

I don't think it's a big deal to take it at Berkeley. I'm planning on taking a class next summer to finish the 1st half of the req. at another UC or CC and finishing the 2nd half next year.

Is this a good idea? Are they not going to accept transferred credit since I've already enrolled? Will they not let me graduate if I don't take a course Freshman year?

Satisfy it before you graduate. That's it.

No, you dont have to take the course your freshman year and you can take it at a CC or another UC, but i think the last half needs to be at berkeley.

for CoE, once you are a berkeley student, you cannot take any classes at another school (CC or another UC) for credit or requirement purposes. only classes you took before enrolling at berkeley will count.

Thanks for the replies.

riyam: that's what I was afraid of. Wait, so summer classes at other schools are useless? IIRC the other UCs let you take classes elsewhere.

if you're taking a summer class right now (or just finished, i dunno the timeline) that class will count for credit and requirement purposes, meaning if you took 2 semesters worth of writing class, you're R&C is done and gone. as far as i'm concerned, you're free to take classes but they won't count for credit. all credit used for graduation purposes must be earned from Cal once your first freshman class starts.

I actually also have a question about the R&C requirement. According to L&S, which is my college, I satisfied both halves of the req with my IB test scores. But, I might try to transfer into CoE... maybe. So, anyway, according to CoE, I only satisfy the first half. In fact, according to CoE, you can ONLY satisfy the second half with an actual course. Neither AP nor IB can satisfy both halves, says CoE. However, I thought R&C was a uni-wide req, so wouldn't the req equivalent all be the same no matter what college? Is it maybe a mistake on the behalf of CoE? Can any one comment on this?

No, R&C is based on your college. The entry level writing is university wide, as in all UC, maybe even all Ca universities.

I can't seem to find a class that satisfies the second part of it that isn't full. I'll have to wait till spring I think.

Yeah, usually R&C classes fill up fast. You should sign up during phaseI next semester
