Does anyone have any tips on the ACT reading comprehension section? I never finish on time, and when I do I make mistakes. How do you guys tackle the questions? For example, do you read the question and then answer it by looking in the passage without reading it, or do you read the passage then attempt the questions while referring back to the passage?

I’ve got an 800 on the December CR SAT, and I can tell you that it’s all practice. Do as many practice CR, the more mistakes you make, the better. Gradually, and it may be a while, your mistakes will dwindle to close to 0. I never read the question prior to reading the passage. When you read the passages, read it with heart – slowly if you must. Rushing over passages only means that you’ll miss many of the questions.

What about vocab questions? Did you just learn a lot of new SAT vocab words?

Read the passage first and concentrate on EVERY WORD. It’s ok to take 4 minutes on each of the ACT passages; you’ll answer the questions much faster. On the SAT, where timing is essentially a non-issue, you have even more time to read the passages.
I went from averaging a 30 on ACT reading to a 36 on the December ACT.
