Reading on ACT

I got a 27 on my reading section on December ACT which is really crappy. I know that I can do better than that thought because I got a 740 on SAT reading. What should I do differently for ACT than SAT? I didn't finish on ACT but I think it must be more than that?? Did anyone have a similar situation?

I got a 710 on SAT reading and a 36 on ACT reading

What I did was mark the passages quickly according to the line reference questions. Then I started the passage. However, I didn't really READ the passage in detail. I sort of skimmed/speed read it and stopped at the line reference questions and answered those. By the time I finished the passage I was able to answer the questions. This didn't always work on the SAT as the questions there are harder and require more analysis. The ACT has much easier and straightforward questions. Because of the time crunch, you have to be able to read and absorb content quickly on the ACT. Judging by your SAT score, you should be able to do that. Hope that helped. Best of luck.

Yea I think the main problem was not finishing and bubbling "C" the rest of the way down lol

i think what helped me was that i took 2 practice reading sections before i took the actual test....on the first practice section i took, i didn't even get to the last passage....thats when i learned that you have to read faster here than you did on the SAT, which gives you more time....at first, i thought it was impossible to do within the time limit, but it really is doable

you get 35 minutes for 4 passages each with 10 questions

so you have approx 8 and a half minutes per passage....try reading the passage in 3-4 mins and then answer the questions in the remaining time...you dont need much time for the questions...they are either directly stated in the passage or easily inferred from reading it

I posted this on another thread.

I'm currently tutoring some 7th graders for the ACT for CTY, and I like what my Kaplan book said. It said ACT reading is not "comprehending and remembering," it's "finding and paraphrasing." Basically the ACT reading answers are paraphrases of the actual text, so I use the line reference to find generally where the answer should be, and try to put an answer with the text. I would definitely read a question and look for the answer in the passage via skimming. It works so much better, and those passages are long considering the amount of time you have.

I went with this strategy and got a 33.

I read/skim the questions first and then when I find an answer in the passage, I fill in the bubble. The questions on the ACT are straightforward enough that you can do this. This same strategy does not work for the SAT. You have to legit read the passage and then answer the questions because they are more difficult and require you to refer back to passage when figuring out the answer.

I got a 36 on the ACT and an 800 on the SAT...so I guess these strategies worked.

Yeah you have to make sure you finish its the easiest section though I got a 31 when I was in 7th grade with no preparation or anything
