<p>For the first one, if you are irresolute, it means you tend to vacillate on issues or on your opinion or whatever. This is very similar to indecisiveness. A moral coward who is also irresolute would be wary to join in on a debate about controversial issues. </p>

<p>For A, the rest of the sentence doesn’t make sense if either word is used since pessimism doesn’t mean indecisive or not participatory and uprightness is the opposite of what you want. </p>

<p>I think for the second one, the best way to approach it is to look for words that are opposites. Convention (the agreed up on norm) and dissent (disagreement with the norm) work. If you look at “convey powerful challenges to contemporary social standards”, you’ll see that convention and dissent also work because convention = contemporary social standards and he applies powerful challenges (dissent) to them.</p>
