I'm probably going to take the GRE in 2010. Are there any good news sources to read that will prepare me for the verbal portion of the GRE? If so, which ones are the best in your experiences?

News sources are normally written to conform to an eighth grade vocabulary level. News sources are therefore not generally good GRE prep.

Instead, read scholarly articles, including those from outside of your primary field of study. I recommend articles from the fields of Classics, English literature, and Critical / Cultural Studies (especially postmodernist criticism). Read classic and contemporary fiction, from the 19th century to the present -- from Dickens to Vollmann. Look up every single word you do not understand.

Any study of Latin and/or Greek will also be tremendously effective in enabling you to identify the meanings of root words, as well as those of prefixes and suffixes. If you can take a year or two in either of these languages, I can practically guarantee that your GRE verbal score will skyrocket.

Thanks. btw, how would I get a hold of these? I suppose that Scientific American doesn't count.

Um, the library?

Seriously, there are scholarly journals for every field and subfield of study. Just read around in the periodicals section.
