Let’s make a consolidated list of tried and true reading strategies!
Something I’m going to try for myself (never done before though), will be thoroughly reading the first, second, and last paragraphs of each passage. Then, I’ll go to the identification questions to get more familiar with the text as I prepare for the all-inclusive ones (which I’ll miss anyway).
For reference, my reading pace is relatively awful; no way can I even “skim” a reading passage and finish in time.
Any thoughts on this particular strategy? If you want to share your working strategy, please feel free to post as well.
Hopefully we can garner some good advice before the April 9th fiesta.
I’ve tried numerous strategies that people have posted; many have failed miserably.
You have to try each one and then find which one helps you the most.
(Your strategy depends largely on your target score)
For me, (I’m shooting for 32/33) I read each question and write down one word for each question. (e.g. What is the main purpose of the passage --> I write down “purpose”). Then, I skim through the passage and as I come to the answer to each question I answer it.
Unfortunately you’re probably right; two ACTs ago I got a 24 due to excessively long passages and ludicrously difficult questions, but the one directly after yielded a 34 with no further preparation. Goes to show how much of a scam that test truly is.
