I really need help on the Reading Test. On the real thing i got a 27 and i need for it to be a high 30. I ran out of time on it and had to guess on the whole last passage. I read the passages completely and then answered the questions. Help plz?

I'll bump this for you since I also need help in the reading and need it at least above a 30 as well.

I used to be bad at the reading, but i did a ton of studying for the SAT reading section, and then when I went back to the ACT it seemed way easier. I think the ACT questions are easier and less tricky than the SAT.

My advice:

Always be able to justify the answer you mark. Make sure there is some evidence in the text that the answer is true. There always is. Never mark an answer without knowing that. Now of course, you can't spend all day on the question... but doing it fast just takes practice.

Just do as many practice tests as u can. do the SAT reading passages (adjust the time) to get more practice; these r much tougher and if u do well on these, u can easily improve ure ACT reading scores... dont worry about the time, but read the passages really fastly (skim if u need to)

Is it advisable to not read the passage in its entirety, rather just look for the answers for each question individually? If I read the whole passage, I run out of time...

I'm not a very fast reader, so I had to skim each passage and then answer the questions. I still got a 36 on it. So you could just try skimming on a few practice tests.

Are the reading passages always quite long? (Especially prose fiction?)

most are between 80-100

For the SAT , Iways read the entire passage. When I don't, there is always one question that I cannot find the answer to, like one of the general questions about the passage as a whole, and then I panic and it screws me over. Read the whole thing, pretty carefully, but not REALLY carefully (don't memorize it), and then answer the questions.

But, for the ACT, I always am squeezed for time when I do this. But i still manage a 34-35 on reading?!?!? I am good at guessing...

what i do is i read a couple of paragraphs, answer a couple of questions, read a couple of paragraphs, answer a couple questions....

Yeah. I do the same thing collegeworried23 .. but it never works for me. I tried skimming and screws me over. I tried to read the passage and Im short on time. I try to read some of the passages and sometimes skip a question and have to read the passage again to understand it again.

I think I should just practice.. practice.. practice. I dont see any easy way out of this and the CR on the SAT as well.

You just have to read the whole thing - really really fast. If you can't read well, you aren't going to get a really good score on the test. That's what the test is for!

definitely do a lot of practice tests to work on timing.
and you aren't trying to memorize the passage, just get the general gist.
I had a 35 reading with no prep.
