Readmission

First, let me start by saying that I know this topic doesn’t quite fit the forum but I didn’t know where else to ask it. I figured this would be a good place to get some input from those who might have either personal experience or know someone with experience in this situation.

This past December I was academically suspended, after one semester as a Freshman, from a top private LAC in the southeast after failing 3 of my 4 classes (and getting a C in the 4th). I received an email from the Dean in early December after finals and break had started saying I was subject to academic suspension and I had a week to submit a letter of appeal, basically.

I wrote a letter explaining why I did so poorly and explaining that I did have some personal and medical issues pertaining to my Adhd throughout the semester, but fully accepting responsibility for my actions, or lack there of. I explained that I was wrong to not reach out to anyone for help (professors, advisors, counseling services). I explained that after this semester I had learned a lot about myself as a person and a student, what I would do differently if I were allowed to return and that I would greatly appreciate the chance to be able to come back and rectify myself academically. As I suspected, I was suspended anyway.

After talking with the Dean I was told that I could reapply for admission at the end of the summer for the Fall of 2016 semester and the academic committee would review my case and let me know at the beginning of August. She basically said that if I could show them I have been a productive and “changed” human being (by taking classes locally, working etc) during my time away from school they could let me back in. When registering for community college classes this semester I asked if taking a full load (4 classes) would increase my chances of being readmitted since it could show my ability to balance a full load-even though the school will only accept a maximum of 7 credit hours. The Dean said “Not necessarily” and that “good grades” in the classes I take are most important.

Long story short, I ended up taking 4 classes because the only person who is allowed to tell you what courses can and can’t transfer at the school that suspended me was “out of the country and unable to be contacted” during the registration period at my community college. I took 4 hoping at least two would be eligible for transfer, should I be readmitted.

I am nearing the end of the semester and, while its been hell to pay socially and emotionally moving home after flunking out of the college my family was so proud to send me to, I think I have been doing alright. I have been working part time at the job I held over the summer and babysitting and running errands for a few families frequently. It looks like I will end up with One A and three Bs this semester. Though most of these will likely be high Bs but my community college only reports letter grades with out pluses or minuses.

My question is, If I have a good letter from one of my supervisors at work, the Dean from my community college (saying I never got in trouble and showed up to class) and maybe a letter from a current professor, and write a good readmission essay will those three Bs put me out of the running? Would you you think they would be considered “good grades” in the eyes of a committee at a private LAC?

I know this is long winded but I would REALLY appreciate any input. I’m kind of desperate because I am going to have a really hard time going anywhere else decent with the GPA I have after being suspended, if I don’t get back in from where I came.

Thanks in Advance.

There is no way to know. It will entirely be up to the school. I really don’t know why you took 4 classes when the dean specifically told you grades were more important than taking a full load, but that’s water over the bridge now. What is your cum GPA with your new classes added in?
