And folks I haven't mentioned the garbage bags of clothes. Bags. Multiple bags. Baling wire and duct-taped dark green hefty cinch sak luggage bags. LOL.

That's funny, my bother mentioned baling wire, too. I explained that duct tape is the new baling wire. :)

Forklift?? Pallet truck?? hahahaha -we were presented with a flat dolly on arrival - to be shared by at least 3,000 kids - 3 10 story dorms - well they had a few at least - and the dorm area was under construction so no pulling up right out front - at least 1/3 miles away was the very closest - we got there very early - 1st in line LOL - but that may not be the case where you are going - I would squish in a small dolly to lug all that stuff if at possible LOL.......... or a good workout you will have - whether you want it or not. Make sure you have your running shoes packed too - and some cold bottled water too.

2 very very very important things required by ALL college students - if it moves and ISN'T supposed to - duct tape - if it doesn't move and IS supposed to - WD40

Gee that bailing wire just may come in handy tho uuummmmm

Check. I picked up a bright red Binford 2180 Handtruck/Dolly at Tractor Supply last night. I almost sprung for the 2190 but I didn't think that I'd use 4 wheel drive all that much.

Curm - alot of the NC kids will be on the move this weekend - at many the classes start on/around the 23rd - so the southeast/atlantic may be a traffic jam this weekend LOL

ROFL ROFL ROFL CURM hahahahaha - RED my favorite color for a dolly LOL - congrats to you for being the proud owner of that thing LOL - keep it handy - you will get good use out of it over the next few years!!!

We too are headed off to ND, letting loose of child #3 and will have an empty (yeh!) household. Leave Friday am with too much stuff, expect to drive back with some of it.

Have a great trip Curmudgeon and family. It sounds like you have EVERYTHING fully under control :) DD doesn't leave for school until Sept 13 (classes start the 18th). Right now she is (not so) patiently waiting to get her roommate assignment and dorm assignment. Classes??? Hah...she registers for those on the 14th of Sept...if there are any left by then!!

momnipotent: Hahahahaha...lol..lol
momnipotnet's son: What is so funny??( feigning interest??)
momnipotent: uh...(sobering up a bit)...this post by curmudgeon is hilarious
momnipotent's son: (after reading post) that's not that funny mom
momnipotent: uh..you just have to know curmudgeon
momnipotent's son: do you really know this curmudgeon person?
momnipotent begins earnest search for school for son.....killjoy!

mudge: DD leaves for Boston U. soon. There is a pile of "stuff" on her bedroom floor which has grown exponentially in the last 2 weeks which I believe that she intends to haul to Boston......can I borrow that truck with the cool mudflaps?

Hi Curmudge, I remember so well when you began this journey, and D began rolling her eyes ;)!
You will have a wonderful time, with a few tears. Don't forget it is not too far for shopping for the items not in the big plastic containers, and be sure to have some barbecue.

Best of luck to both of you, she will have the most exciting of times. We've still got a month before the big move back.

USC is starting this week, Beloit-ers are off, hmm, must be others too? I imagine a wave through the country of rolling-eyed girls, mute boys, and tearful parents off to toss their babies into life as adults.

Alu, for some reason after reading your post I got to thinking about those East European "birthing in water" videos. Yep. That's the visual I will have for this good-bye.

Let's hear some more '10er stories. We few that have posted can't be the only families dealing with trucks and troubles.

My D reports in to W&L for athletic preseason training on the 26th. Somehow we will fit her brother in the car (Saturn VUE) amidst all her stuff. Perhaps we'll tie him to the roof.

The pile of her non-wearables (fridge, computer....) grows bigger by the day but she still hasn't started packing. :(

Curm
We leave for USC(Carolina version) on Thurs.Getting key on Fri one day early from the nice housing people who take pity on OOS'ers so we dont have to pile stuff into our hotel room.Shipped two big boxes yesterday and the extra bedroom is stuffed and awaiting packing tomorrow.Who says boys dont have alotta stuff?
S is insisting on taking his favorite NY Yankee poster (Matsui)..how do you think thats going to go over down there?
Had to rent a minivan there as we just learned S will be responsible for the fridge and TV for the room, roommate's Mom decided he shouldnt have a TV.Wonder if she'll mind that his roommate has one,and cant live w/o it being on.
Should be an interesting mix..half jewish/half Irish NY'er with a liberal attitude rooming with a local SC Mormon. Both are into the same kind of music... apparently thats how they matched them up!
I'm sure great scenarios and stories will come out of this pairing!
Good luck to you and your D on your journey.Hope she gets the schedule adjustments she needs and has a great first semester.

We leave Saturday to take her to a pre-orientation trip - and then return the next weekend for orientation. Two trips - two truckloads!! How can you beat that! I don't know how we will get everything back at the end of the year. She has enjoyed the shopping, but unforunately has not actually started packing.

Got the schedule she wanted, maybe this is payback for high school where classes taught once a year were always offered at the same time! Has corresponded/talked to the roommate and coordinated the room.

She's excited and hesitant to go - college gets farther and farther from home every day and almost all of her friends have remained in state.

Congratulations to the class of 2010 as they start the great adventure!

I wonder where those years went - on this date in 1987, we were anticipating his arrival, and the mix of uncertainty and excitement feels similar.

Ditto! On this date in 1987 I was hanging out in the living room wishing the kid could just decided to show up already! He ended up two weeks overdue -- so August 15 was really wishing and hoping!

I never dreamed that 19 years later we'd be headed for Cornell this week. He will have his 19th birthday on Labor Day! Tonight we are at the beach for one last family fling --home tomorrow and then off to Cornell on Thursday afternoon.
