Not sure why DMV in other states can’t outsource some of their functions. I got my international driving permits at AAA a few times and the experiences were much more pleasant. The TSA PreCheck program also outsources some of its functions.
I took a stack of documents like that when I went with my 16YO son to get his real ID/drivers license a few years ago. Had birth certificate, passport, a copy of his high school transcript (that was an accepted document) and maybe a few other things. The man at the MVD didn’t even want to see his passport—makes it too complicated he said—just looked at his birth certificate and high school transcript (unofficial) which doesn’t even have our address on it. Because of open enrollment laws here it doesn’t even confirm we live in the same county or zip code as the school he attends. But he got his Real ID!
DH’s license was getting illegible—regular licenses have a 30yr shelf life in AZ—you couldn’t read the last few numbers anymore, so he went and got a Real ID recently. I think they did look at his passport.
I still don’t have one. Was going to get one after the first of the year but no rush now. Maybe it will finally actually really be required before my current license expires in the mid 2030’s.
In Colorado the state issues the driver’s licenses but car registration is by county, so you get to go to two different places. It can be done online after the first time.
