Okay.. so I just got back from Preview and it was exhausting but helpful and productive, and I have something that is bothering me.. in fact it has been bothering me for a while.

IDK if it is because I am just not well aware, "sheltered", or ignorant of gainesville/uf but I just dont see how UF is the "major party school" everyone makes it out to be. It is so competitive to get in now and a lot of the students in Preview seemed reasonable, able to focus, and had high expectations of themselves. A lot of people have told me that the police are really cracking down on the frat parties and off campus house parties. Also, many presentations addressed the very serious consequences of drinking on campus or in the stadium/dorms and getting caught and in trouble and all that stuff.

I just dont get it. Do students, specifically freshmen, really STILL want to get involved in that stuff? At least, as many as people say there are (people like to say that a large portion of UF students are partiers)? I could tell that at least SOME students in Preview were much more excited about the parties than the academics, but it couldn't have been more than 1/10. So, where is the deficit?

When it comes to partying at UF, is it just a big exaggeration? Are they just used to nostalgically recall the "old days" and turn their heads from the new wave of focused students? Keep in mind I have never been to downtown gainesville on a friday night and I have never been to a UF football game. I just dont see how UF claims Partying + University = Lower Achieving Students when everyone else and the statistics say UF = High Achieving Students + Partying.

It's college... what do you think?
There will always be people who sit in their dorm all day and study, and there will always be people who go out and party every night. You will see this even in Ivy league schools.

I think your main problem is that you separate those who party from those who study.

People do both.

Not necessarily. There are some who party and don't study at all and vice versa at just about every school.

What do you think the average college GPA is for somebody who both studies and parties heavily during UG? With the exception of an extremely bright few who don't make any major ****ups and can multi task well, you won't get many dual partiers/students with greater than a 3.4-3.5.

No **** there are people who only do one or the other. The TC, however, sees people who are interested in academics and assumes they aren't interested in partying.

I don't know what world you live in, ragnar, but the average college student studies during the week and parties on the weekend.

Let me just say that at UF, many people abide by the "Work Hard, Party Hard" mentality. I know plenty of people who have 3.9+ GPA's (in hard majors like pre-med and engineering) who party 2-4 nights a week. Many of my friends were valedictorians, class presidents, etc. in high school but that does not stop them from partying in college. From my personal experience as an upcoming sophomore at UF, kids who work real hard need to find something to release all that stress. That's where the partying comes in...

You can't just generalize across such a broad spectrum of 30,000 people. Yes, some people party, yes, people study, yes some people manage both really well, yes, some don't party, yes, some don't study. Just do what works for you. That's the best part about going to such a large university is that there are so many different types of people and you will surely find your niche.

First of all you went to preview during summer A session i'm guessing which is a dead time at UF. Secondly you were only here for two days you can't judge the party scene that way. If you want to see that UF is a party school walk down university any night of the week, or go downtown, come during a footbal game, or go down frat row at night. Also UF student study just as hard as they play that why we are so highly ranked.

Yea but frats don't usually invite dudes to their houses to party? but trust me if you are here for summber (and your not makng the mistake of taking a difficult schedule) you WILL have FUN. its impossible not to. Actually that is a general statment for UF overall
