I go on the website and I can see what kelley wants in terms of gpa and sat scores, but I was wondering if anyone who has actual experience can shed some light on what the real numbers are. My son has a 3.8 unweigted and a 4.0 weighted gpa so far and has a 32 ACT score, however the superscore is 33. I believe they would take the 33 but I was wondering what his chances were. We are from NY. I was also hoping for a scholorship, but you never know how those things turn out.
He will have no problem getting in! IU takes the schools weighted GPA, and his ACT is well-over the required 30. They do superscore the ACT as well, so the 33 should help him receive upwards of $10k annually from the Dean’s Scholarship.
One thing on the scholarships, the cut off date I thought was Nov. 1 to have everything in to be considered. Has your son applied? Assuming you are talking about fall of '17 enrollment.
My son is a Jr In high school currently. We live in NY and he thinks he wants to do accounting. There are some excellent state schools in NY but I want to apply to a wide range of schools. Heck, he is our only child and he has worked hard so it is a fun process. The good thing about IU is that the out of state tuition is not too bad and if he gets a scholarship, that makes it even better.
I do see the average act is 30 but a lot of times you have to come in at the 75 percentile. I am not sure if being oos is a positive or negative. That said, maybe he has to be up in the 32 range. His gpa is a 4.0 weighted but that is a 95. My son is not a 100 student, but a 3.8 equates to a 93 on the scale that I use.
Lets see what happens, and thanks for your feedback
You don’t have to worry at all about your son getting in. He will easily get into IU and direct admit into Kelley. He’s also virtually guaranteed to receive some kind of scholarship, and he definitely has a good chance for the $11k per year OOS automatic scholarship.
Thanks for the info. It is funny how they have a policy to contest the decision if you are not accepted the first go around. For instance, if you have a gpa of 3.65 and your act score is 32 you can petition. I wonder, isn’t that more work for the adcom? I mean they should just look at the application and if they see that Billy had a 3.60 gpa which is below a 3.8 but had an act score of 34, shouldn’t they just say, hey, this kid is a good candidate? I mean it is a bit silly that you have to petition to get admitted under that example. It just seems like a lot more work all the way around. It is not a big deal, but you would think that IU would have a sliding scale of sorts. A gpa of 3.6 but an act of 33 would get you in, or visa versa. An act score of 29 but a gpa of 4.2 would get you in. Just saying.
My son wants to do accounting so I know the recruiting is great. However, you have to do well. You cannot have a 2.5 gpa and expect the the big 4 accounting firms to throw themselves at your feet.
My daughter is someone that filed the petition this year - 3.77 and 29 - both scores were under the Kelley “required”, but she received the Congratulation and Welcome letter from Kelley. If a student is slightly below on both GPA and test scores, it’s certainly worth a shot - 2 short essays for the petition.
I was wondering how long it took to hear back about your daughter’s petition to Kelly ? She got the form letter from Kelley encouraging her to petition and did so a few days ago. 28 ACT (29 if they super Score?) GPA 3.98.
