Real Scoop About Move-In Day

hi everyone, just to add my two cents. i am a rising sophomore and so everything is still fresh.

the shuttles are great, but i can guarantee that every saturday (unless it is a freezing miserable day outside and not worth trekking over to the bus), it will be packed, especially on the way back. walmart is the last stop and while there may be some people getting off there, its super packed with everyone already on the bus with groceries from wegmans or stuff from the mall. i highly suggest going to wegmans on sundays instead since it’s a bigger/nicer wegmans, the bus stop is much closer to the wegmans entrance/exit, and it’s pretty much the only place the bus will go to that day.

there aren’t really regular shuttles to the airport for breaks. last year there was only one arranged shuttle when people came back from spring break or winter break. as for amtrak, i have never seen a shuttle go there. i took the rochester bus there twice, and just walked the last two blocks to the station - good only if you don’t have a suitcase and when it’s during the day. there is a bus after to get you over there if you wait another 15 minutes for the transfer.

also about zipcars, there are a few at the med center, which is a bit of a walk, but still it’s not only 5 on campus if someone’s desperate. i know people who have taken zipcars and i have never heard of them having trouble reserving one. having a zipcar or finding someone with a car on campus will be much much more convenient than taking the shuttle. the other shops and restaurants that the bus doesn’t stop at are pretty much inaccessible since there’s quite a few large and very busy roads separating each plaza area, and though i’ve crossed those roads twice, it feels really dangerous. i think that calling the ur sponsored marketplace taxi - 15% off ($10 to marketplace flat, $2 for each additional) might be cheaper instead of the zipcar in the end for longer trips out. the drivers aren’t too bad and one gave us a discount last time on top of it.

anyway, i’m excited to see all the freshman line up outside my dorm though (im at southside). i’ll be juggling hopefully !

My kid ends up calling a cab or bumming a ride to the airport or Amtrak. On the way back, there’s usually other UR kids who share a cab or a ride with a friend.

D often called a cab to get to the airport, but was able to get the free shuttle (at the end of breaks) back to campus.

^^D2 did/ does the same—cab to head to the airport; shuttle to come back to campus.

My d took cabs both ways to/from the airport & train station. But she got some sort of low-cost vouchers that really helped - the cabs only cost about $15.

Two quick points, just in case someone remembers this next year:

Do whatever is necessary to move in early. My kid is working for one of the campus organizations this week. Moved in on Monday. Athletes have been there for a bit. Life is much easier. We drove up to the door, backed the car up to the steps and carried everything up. We went to Target and Walmart for needed stuff and again parked right up against the steps.

If you live in MA or NYC area, see mybushome.com. (Yes, Betsy finally got a website.) Buses at fall break, Thanksgiving, spring and end of school. Reasonably priced, full size coaches, takes as long as driving (or flying if you have to change planes).
