hey. i dont know if this question has been answered but could current students please tell me about how much they spent their freshmen year total? ucla estimates about 23,000. i'm hoping to spend way less than that or else i'll have to take out loans. i'm going to be in a triple in a hall with a 14 regular meal plan. i live in the bay area and will be going home maybe 3 times. thanks!

you will spend less....that's just an estimate. UCLA estimated 21K for me...Im spending something like 8K

wow...but i'm assuming you're not living on campus right?

if I lived on campus i would be spending something like 17K

thanks! i'm hoping to spend less than 19K

how do you get away with 8k...? isnt' tuition in itself almost 7k?

well..no SHIP and 2K scholarship - 4.5K and living in co-op and thats 4K

lolli.. it would be about 7k for tuition. 10-12k for housing. 1k for books. and i don't know what else. i spent a lot haha.

falafel,
here's an estimated breakdown for you:

7k tuition/fees
10k housing
1k books

that's about 18k. now if your goal is to save money, then dont run up your expenses (eating out, ucla clothing, etc.) while you're here, buy some used books, and uh, fly southwest on your way back to san jose.

can someone please explain what lviing "co-op" is? im interested because its pretty cheap. what other cheap housing plans are there?

co-op: student run housing where you get room and 19 meals/week for doing 4-5 hours of chores (kitchen work etc.) per week. Search for UCHA if you are interested. The housing is popular with international students and from what I hear is not that fancy (i.e. compared to dorms or private apartments), but I guess co-op living fosters a sense of community and all that crap so it does have its advantages. Either way, my reason for choosing the co-op is simply the price. UCLA gave me a 12K triple room....I don't think that's worth it. For the same facility I get it for 4K. I figure, I will only use the place to sleep at night anway so I don't need something fancy schamcy. College students have lived and survived in worse conditions....and so will I. But seriously, it's not that bad....it was opened in 1935 and ever since many students have passed through it, so I am not that worried. As a plus, it's right on the edge of campus so I can just walk to all my classes.

I believe it might be too late to get room now, but if you are interested you can still try. I read up on the co-ops a lot and from what I hear it gets full during the Fall quarter.
