Realistic chances at WashU

Looking for some advice before we go forward with looking at Washu.

Child has following stats:
33 ACT 1 sitting in Sept of Junior year. Refuses to take again and I don’t blame child.
Taking 2 subject tests this summer.
2 AP’s this year - expect one 4 and one 5
Taking 4 AP’s next year
Fresh/soph year mostly honors - our public HS does not offer AP classes the first 2 years - we are highly competitive and nationally ranked - FWIW - school prob getting rid of weighting system soon
Good GPA - in top 10%
very good relationship with staff and teachers and will get good recs from counselor and teachers(already asked them)

Typical extras:
3 sport Varsity athlete - local awards, captain, etc…
DECA - Highly involved - officer for 2 years
various clubs with no leadership
volunteer work is typical and child does it when time allows(which is not much because of workload and sports year round)

Doing a Wash U near U this spring. If child likes it we will head out in fall to tour/interview.

Will prob apply to Olin

Are there stats out there available for each school in regards to acceptance?

Google Common Data Set and look at section C.

Yes, I am familiar with CDS. I was talking specific to WashU stats within the Uni. I know UVA publishes something like that and Vandy. Just can’t find one within WashU that breaks it out by Olin, Arts & Sciences, etc…

I don’t know that WashU makes public the acceptance rates of each school. If not, you could contact admissions and see if they will give you that info.

What is your kid’s unweighted GPA? Does s/he have interest in playing a sport at WashU? Demonstrating interest is important to WashU, so make sure your kid signs up for the email list and opens the emails, visit campus, go to AO session when they visit their high school, build relationship with AO by asking questions that aren’t available on website, interview, etc.

UW 3.8 - not much interest in continuing sport(burnout and really wants to have more time to explore other interests - a lot has been asked and expected of him the past three years with regards to sports)

Forgot to add this: No hooks, full pay, white/catholic

And good tip to contact school to see if they break it down internally.

If your child likes Wash U after visiting and it emerges as a strong first choice and you are willing and able to pay for it, an ED application will provide a significant admissions bump. However, if that’s not the case, then don’t apply ED!

If you DS really likes WashU and you can afford whatever aid they provide, go for ED. The admission rate for ED is 30 - 35% which is one of the highest among the most selective school.

I would agree with ED as it’s the best chance for a full pay student with relatively few hooks to be accepted.

33 is a good ACT score, but a 34 would improve the chances for admission. 32-33 would usually be kids with some sort of hook such as URM/legacy/recruited athlete.

WashU doesn’t breakdown numbers of admits/statistics by the schools/academic divisions.

Rising senior here so take advice w a grain of salt:
I think you have decent chances but I’ve heard that WashU is very stats-driven, so the 33 (while an amazing score) may be on the lower side for Wash U. I also think EC’s could be stronger, but definitely emphasize DECA if going for Olin

am rising senior here, looking at a handful of business schools for undergrad - 4.2 W, 3.9 UW, 35 ACT - am trying to figure out if I should gamble on RD vs. ED at WUSTL - there are a number of schools I like for business like Indiana, Texas, Michigan, SMU, and Ohio State - question is Olin that much better than the others to gamble on the RD vs. ED - am visiting formally in July (live in STL). Seems like chances very low in RD unfortunately for many given what seems to be increasing emphasis on ED for their students.
