Realistic Engineering Student Life

So assuming I’ll have a job, (expected from work study to pay for tuition) how much time am I expecting to use lol if we factor 20 hours a week (not including homework in between classes)

Mde, I’d try to only work 10 hours a week for your first semester. First semester is gonna be a wake up call, especially with the rotc class hanging over your shoulder.

I’m not in ROTC… but yes I guess I can ease into the process a bit and work low in the first semester. Thanks

Have any of you ever taken close to 18 credit hours for most semesters? How was that like?

Safron I took 18 credits a few semesters ago. My course load consisted of ME 211, ME 235, ME 240, ME 250 and my upper level math course. I also did research. I did surprisingly well given the time constraints, but here’s some suggestions if you ever want to take 18 credits:

NEVER do what I did. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER. I don’t think 18 credits would have been bad with just 3 engineering courses and a couple LSA courses. It’s really about the type of classes you’re taking, not purely the # of credits. With the classes taking ~ 15-18 hours a week, I would say there was about another 35 hours for studying/homework. If you want to be the guy that goes to your friends house for a Wednesday night party with your LSA buddies, this is definitely not the semester you’re going to be able to do that. With football season going on my attitude was work my ass off 6 days a week, treat saturday as a rest/reward day, repeat over and over. It worked somehow. Again, never do what I did. NEVER! The only benefit was me learning to manage my time better instead of watching TV or whatever like I used to do. And also the winter term following that was comparably the easiest semester ever (did 14 credits, felt like I wasn’t even going to school)

EDIT: also if anyone thinks I’m crazy for doing this, my plan at the time was to do a co op in the winter semester but still be able to graduate on time in May 2012, in 3.5 years basically. So it’s not like im some sadistic academic who wanted to see how much suffering he could endure for the heck of it.

“Have any of you ever taken close to 18 credit hours for most semesters? How was that like?”

I have and was fine, but like walkman said, they weren’t all engineering classes.

FWIW, Umich counsels students to expect 3 hrs. of course work for every credit hour, which would make it more like a theoretical 30 hours on top of a regular (15) credit load…so 20 doesn’t seem bad at all in comparison to what they TELL you to expect ;)

I saw a sample schedule on the UMich website of a typical student majoring in AE.
Credit hours went 17, 17, 17, 16, 15, 16, 15, 15 for semesters 1-8, respectively. A few semesters were entirely engineering courses too. This seems ridiculous, many people advise only taking 12-15, and this major requires this many alone. I wanted to take language classes and other free electives, but there is no way I would be able to.

I don’t know anyone in the Engineering school who expected to take only 12-15 credits for 8 terms and still graduate on time…

actually, a friend will be finishing ME+german minor with on avg 14 or 15 credits, but he came in with 30 some credits

Is there a problem with graduating late?

^Someone’s gotta pay for you to graduate late.

was that sample schedule for someone without any credits coming in?

Yes, that sample schedule assumes you come in with no credits. However they have you taking some unrealistic loads, like 16 credits with your MDE. And then they also advise you to take 13 credits your first semester, instead of 17 like they show.

Well **** im happy i have credits

Are pre-req (Math/chem/ENGR 100or101) and SS/HU classes significantly eaiser than your higher lvl engineering (whatever major) classes?

"Are pre-req (Math/chem/ENGR 100or101) and SS/HU classes significantly eaiser than your higher lvl engineering (whatever major) classes? "

Yes.

Id be dissappointed if they weren’t

How many credits are you allowed to do during the summer and spring term?

6-9 credits is full time status for spring or summer term.
so spring+summer is one whole semester (but splitted into 2 shorter terms of ~1.6 months long) that allows you to get 12~18 credits
