Realistic Options for B Student

I am in the thick of a college search with my son, who is a rising hs senior, and hoping we are looking at the right collection of schools. So far we have visited UNH, Syracuse, SUNY-ESF, Ithaca and soon UVM. We are also thinking about UMaine, Clarkson and Drexel. His GPA is a high “B” and SAT at 1200. His interest is in environmental sciences/studies at a school in the northeast ie PA, NY, VT, NH, ME. I welcome advice and/or success stories.

He could look into Hobart & William Smith, Allegheny, College of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence for a blend of matches and realistic reaches.

Could he look a bit further south at Warren Wilson and UNC Asheville?
Do you have budget constraints? Have you run NPC?

NC State for sciences and the Research Triangle where it is located is great for internships.

Another vote for Allegheny. Good merit for a B student and great environmental science/studies.

Thirding Allegheny

My daughter goes to Plymouth State in NH. The offer both an environmental science and an environmental planning degree.

Also, SUNY Stony Brook has Environmental Design, Policy and Planning
SUNY Buffalo has Environmental Design

I loved Castleton University in VT. Small state school, but reasonably priced for OOS.

I would also throw Allegheny on your list. One of the best undergrad Environmental Science departments in the NE. They are consistently rated in the top 5 for Environmental Science nationally. They have 12 full-time faculty just in Environmental Studies/Science, not to mention their strong Biology and Chemistry depts. They offer excellent merit. It’s it NW PA, so it’s technically the Northeast, but you’ll be close to the Ohio border. It’s featured in the book, “Colleges that Change Lives”.

Take a look at Juniata College in PA. It’s got a very strong Environmental Science dept. It’s featured in the book, “Colleges that Change Lives” This school is strong in the sciences. It gets rave reviews from students.

SUNY-ESF is probably the best, however, you really can’t change your mind about what you want to study. You kind of need to specialize more or less by the end of your Freshman year. If you want to switch to economics, psychology or something else, you’ll need to transfer out, since the school only focuses on a limited number of things. It’s also not a super-traditional college experience. You dorm at ESF but can do a lot of your student activities at Syracuse (which it has a close relationship with). On the plus side if he majors in Environmental Engineering he’s almost guaranteed a job when he graduates. (companies go on campus to recruit students).

If you are open to the SUNY system. Take a look at SUNY-Plattsburgh. It’s not super-highly rated overall, but it has a particularly strong Environmental Sciences dept with lots of partnerships in upstate NY. Plus it’s also in the Adirondacks 1 hour from Montreal and Burlington VT on lake Champlain. Gorgeous setting.

Do you have any cost constraints? What is your budget per year?

Bennington, Bard are two great options too.
