Realistic Shot at the Ivies? Need a second opinion.

Just to start off, my first opinion is myself, so that is why i want a second one, i feel like i could cut it at the ivies but does my resume reflect that, i have been reading a few of these threads over the past few days and it seems as though a lot of people i thought would be receiving praise are being hammered, and yeah i know this is just a forum, but still there is an inkling of truth.

Anyways, here is my summary.

Gender: Male
Race: Indian
GPA: Projected 4.61 W, unweighted 4.0 (only really 4 quarters of school left to do that)
Rank: 3 or 4/596

SAT I: 2270 ( 770 CR, 700 M, 800 W)
SAT II: Signed up for June exams in US hist. Biology, and Math II. In history and science i will probably have 740-780 since i will have just finished studying for the AP's. With math II i will have to restudy because i took precalc last year, and am now in Calc.

Courses: Toughest, 11 AP's, Some ones that i think might stick out are Multivariable Calc. (taken as a senior) and AP Studio Art (senior)
**For the academy i am in we have to do a mandatory 100 hour mentorship or 140 hour independent study in a math or science field. Would this be impressive or not since technically it is part of my curriculum.

EC's: This is what i consider my weak spot, what do you guys think

Debate Team (4 years) Captain 2 years, Regional Finalist, 4th place in districts (09), 2nd place districts (10), various top 5 finishes in Local debate league tournaments

Theater (4 years) Acting and Light Crew (2nd in district, 2nd in region, 8th in state for a one act play)

Scholastic Bowl (3 years) captain 1 year (district and regional champions)

Football JV (2 years)-does JV make it weaker, i mean it was still a huge time commitment of 3+ hours a day and in the summer.

Varsity Tennis (2 years)

French Honor Society

Operation Smile

Comm. Service:
Volunteer for the summer reading program at library (50 hours)
Volunteering at an aquarium. (50-100 hours)

Work Exp.
***Founded a shirt company with some friends, i think this is the most unique part of my app, expresses interest in business and design.

Worked as a graphic Designer for a local ad company one summer.

Will have an internship at a investment group over the summer

You have a good shot, but obviously you’re competing against thousands of other people with good shots. Your ECs are fine. Just apply. What’s the worst that can happen?

Your app looks good to me

OP might get rejected, go into his room and cry for hours… Then the next day, when his parents come to check up on how hes doing, all they’ll see is a dead body hanging from a rope. Youre right. This isnt so bad. lol

^Wow shph119

hahahaha, yeah i don’t think the hanging thing is going to happen. I really do want to go to an ivy league school, mainly because most of them have the degree i want to pursue (Cognitive Science), however if i don’t make it i think i will make it into UVa, which also has that degree.

Anyways, looking at my application, what needs the most work, I think it is community service, but again how important is service to colleges?

…you need no work. i applied to 5 ivies and my grades and test scores are lower than yours, and my rank is 2/108. my extra curriculars are really strong, and that’s what i’m leaning on. you should apply  you’ll never get in if you don’t try

You have a GREAT shot! Stop being so negative about yourself  And in any case if you don’t have a shot, I certainly don’t …
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/882302-chance-me-please-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

I have a similar resume, and applied to Brown, Princeton, Penn and Stanford. I’m not EXPECTING to get in, but I figure I have a shot, especially at the ones with higher acceptance rates (Brown and Penn). No matter what its going to be competitive, and the Ivies COULD accept all valedictorians with perfect SAT’s, but what fun would that be? They are looking for diversity so just apply and if you get in congrats, and if not you’ll be happy wherever you go! Some advice for juniors looking to apply next year: State school and liberal arts colleges can be lots of fun and honors programs will give you academic challenge equal to Ivies. If you can afford the application fees, just apply to as many schools as possible. You can always transfer, and if you’re like me you probably will want to go to grad school and go on to get a doctorate, which gives you plenty of opportunity to go to great schools! Ivies are great, and so are other colleges. Just enjoy yourself, work hard, play hard, and you’ll be happy. Which is what really matters… ha at least so I am told!

after reading some chance threads, i became once again worried about my qualifications, For some reason now all the chance threads I read have people with better stats being told that they only have a slight chance. Crazy stuff. This is a glorified bump.

Oh, gosh, seriously stop being so harsh on yourself! XD

Life is so unexpected that you might surprise yourself. Just LIVE, and don’t worry TOO much about anything. Do what you love.

THis is the first time I’ve been on CollegeConfidential in two years. I used to be soo worry, but then I thought, “to hell with it,” and started doing a lot of journalism and writing, which is what I loved, even though I didn’t think it would get me far. But to my surprise, I got into Stanford, and I think following my own path (instead of worrying about what made the “perfect applicant”) is what helped the most. XD

Don’t worry, I am not living or dying by college admissions, but having worked hard for 3.5 years now, I just want to know whether there is a good chance it will “pay” off in the form of acceptance to a prestigious school. I can honestly say that the only thing I am doing purely for college admissions is a little bit of volunteer work, other than that everything I do i do because I like. But again, what are my chances at schools like Brown, UPenn(Wharton), Yale, and Cornell (AEM major).

Brown: Perhaps. Medium reach.

UPenn (Wharton): One of the hardest schools to get into. I’d say high reach. But then again, it’s a high reach for everyone.

Yale: Medium-High reach. Same for everyone applying to HYPS.

Cornell: High match. Cornell is one of the easier (relatively speaking) Ivy schools to get into.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/906436-chance-me-upper-level-universities-i-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks,
Leon

When you look at this year’s acceptance statistics and the number of qualified students, every ivy except maybe for some schools at Cornell has become a big reach for every kid who is not a val with a 1550/1600. We’re talking under 10% admit rates at half including all of the athletes and minority students and approaching single digits at the rest.

Yeah college admissions have gotten a lot harder, anyways, what do you guys think my chances are at

Yale
UPenn (Wharton)
Brown
Cornell (AEM)
MIT
Hopkins

Consider yourself a mid reach at everyone school. Hopkins might be a low reach or mid match.

would it be arrogant of me with my grades/scores/accomplishments to assume that I will get into UVA (in state), basically can I consider UVA a safety school, as weird as that sounds. I plan on applying to VT and UVa, both in state for me, and then most of these prestigious schools.

no chance whatsoever, no chance at all…

i am going to assume that’s a joke nmsfsat, in general CC has just confused me over what a good candidate for the Ivies/Top Schools is. One kid at my HS got into Princeton this year, he was ranked 6 or 7, 2250 SAT, somewhat of a math genius, tennis team, scholastic bowl, and a few other things but nothing compared to some of the kids here on CC. Seeing that he got in gives me some hope, but then again, reading some of these threads is just ridiculous.

Most Ivy’s are going to be mid to higher reaches. The SAT score is a bit weak and the ECs lack depth, but you’re certainly competitive.
