Realistic?

I haven't talked to the adcoms at the colleges I'm looking at, but how realistic is a double major in a form of biology + comp sci, while also completing my pre-med requirements?

I don’t recommend doing that as a pre-med student. it will be too hard to do both AND also get the high BCMP GPA and cum GPA for med school.

However, if you’re trying to have a back-up plan then just do the CS major with the pre-med req’ts. Why include Bio as a second major???

My kids’ undergrad actually has a CS major pre-med track, so other schools may as well. Even if a school doesn’t, it’s not rocket science to add the pre-med pre-reqs to any major.

I was interested in CS purely as a plan B in case Med didn’t work out. I’ve noticed that biologists arent as well off as CS majors after gradation. I love science more, particularly biology, but CS seems more reliable of a backup.
Thoughts?

So why major in Bio at all? Just major in CS and do the pre-med pre-reqs. Why have Bio as a major? What good will that do you?

I guess just the interest in biology is keeping me attached to the idea. I suppose I could minor in Bio, but I’ve heard from numerous sources that minors arent really useful anymore. I’d essentially be doing it for the love of science. Is this a logical decision?

Minors may not be “useful” in terms of helping with employment, but look at what your options are:

1) Med school…so having the minor or major in bio could be useful (but not necessary) for doing well on the MCAT and in med school. (again, not necessary to have a minor or major).

2) Working in the CS field…so neither the bio major or minor would make a difference.

So in neither case is a major or minor in bio necessary. If you want to minor in Bio, then do so. There doesn’t seem to be any reason to major in Bio if you want to have CS as a back up.

You should look into schools that offer computational biology as a major. I know that CMU offers this as a major. Next year, I will probably also have this problem when applying to college.

Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Biomedical engineering are all options…
