amnesia, look at the people from our school doing the honors program. They are definitely NOT the introverted/antisocial types. I think the honors program is a great feature of UF, and it is the primary reason why I was so torn between Vandy and UF. The Honors College provides a separate - but still integrated - community that is smaller and generally smarter than the university as a whole. If you had a chance to enter the Honors College, I would not hesitate to take that opportunity.

hi amnesia, my S just visited UF (we are from New Orleans metro area) and stayed in Hume; people were great and really nice to him. The honors kids who took him to lunch and toured him around were friendly and definitely not anti-social. He did choose UF and feels great about his choice.

hhmm... i guess honors is fine... you think graduating from UF Honors instead of UF makes the difference at med school?

slip, yeah I guess... but there are kids in my grade that have been told by their brothers and sisters at UF that the honors is:

more work, less fun

harder to get an A

you can congregate in the main dorms and discuss

isn't this a good thing?

My S, like Tabby's is out of state, choosing UF honors for the opportunity to get a good undergrad education for a really good price, leaving his college fund for grad school. He is also most definitely NOT antisocial or introverted! And, the guys that he stayed with in the honors dorm were also really cool and not at all nerdy (which, he will admit, was his fear).

UF is very attractive because it'll be free for me (and a lot of people on Bright Futures), but then again, if I can get into a better school out of state, it'll be hard to pass up the opportunity. I mean, free tuition is nice, but it shouldn't be your only consideration. I know people who rejected Duke to go to UF b/c Duke was expensive, just b/c Duke didnt give 100% aid! If Duke gave me some aid, I would be willing to get some loans just so I don't miss a good opportunity.

At times I wish I was black or hispanic because they get so many benefits. My friend got a full ride to Rochester (42k) because she's hispanic getting an IB diploma. I don't believe affirmative action is the answer or the right approach to achieve racial equality.

If only it were all as simple as "getting some loans"............Easy to say now, rougher later to pay back............

nup, whites will eventually have a backlash to this. remember what history shows... just food for thought. they dismissed him as a mad man.

i think it is bogus..

i am considering UF only because it's free... and because it is a great state school, but they should raise tuition to make it a lot better and smaller class sites. it also sucks that there is a bunch of cutoffs for sats and stuff.

amnesia,

I don't know if your friends' brothers and sisters were trying to trick you or what, but I have taken 5 honors classes at UF and they are generally more fun and easier than regular classes (Age of the Blockbuster, History of Rock and Roll, the Tao of Star Trek, etc.) and you are pretty much guaranteed to make an A or B+ if you even try a little.

yeah.... that sounds like a waste... high school, no matter how hard the classes are, are not challening. i wake up at 5am and study for tests sometimes, but other than that... i want to be academically challenged, or else im just wasting my time.

Oh, believe me, they are challenging. Everything in college is not about grades. The challenge is reflected in the discussion. But, it sounds like maybe you really don't belong in the UF honors program.
