My DD has decided on interior design as her career path. She spent this past summer at Pratt and loved the course. I think she can get into Pratt easily for college next fall, but I want her to consider a few other schools for interior design, which is offered at HumEc. Her stats: 3.62 weighted GPA (unknown class rank, but certainly not in top 10 percent at a supercompetitive suburban high school in the NYC suburbs), 30 ACT, 5 AP Psychology, terrific portfolio with great art teacher recs, mediocre extracurriculars (mostly dance--she's got 12 years under her belt and is working as an assistant at a dance school). She's composing her essays now. I think her grades mean she probably won't get in, but I like to say "never say never." Should we visit? Should she even think of Cornell as a possibility?

I think you should definitely visit and should consider applying! She won’t get in if she doesn’t apply. Syracuse is also a good school for interior design.

Yes, I’m encouraging her to apply although when we went to look at it in April she was turned off by the emphasis on sports. She is not looking for a party school and is afraid that SU is one. Also, she didn’t like the fact that the art students were relegated to a warehouse some miles off campus, although I think it’s definitely worth rethinking that.

If she doesn’t want a party school then definitely avoid SU as it is ranked the #1 party school in the nation.
