Hello!
I've decided to go into McGill arts, thinking of International Development or Economics and am now very excited about my decision. It's financially the best one for me :)

I am confused about the residences. Here are things to consider:

a) I am not a party person at all. And I happen to be a teetotalist, as in I do not drink.
b) I am very chirpy though and very excited about the diversity at McGill. I am looking forward to making life long friendships!
c) The idea of centralized bathrooms is a bit creepy. I'd like one bathroom, preferably shared with not more than 2 people.
d) Preferably on the meal plan but it would be nice to cook once in a while.
e) Freshman year I've heard is very difficult, so a bit of quiet would be encouraging.
f) I am very politically motivated- signing petitions and protests kind of person. I would love to get involved wherever I can. I love political or world issues debates!

So far Royal Victoria college (centralized bathrooms though), Greenbriar apartments and la citadelle has caught my eye.

What would you suggest? Also would you happen to know which majors in the faculty of art have the smallest classes? so far I've heard they are all massive!

THANK YOU <3

^you just described my situation exactly (except for the political part haha) How do you feel about having a roommate? Personally I don’t like the thought of sharing a room with someone so my first choice is a single in La citadelle. I’ve heard that greenbriar does not have much of a sense of community as other residences; a similar situation can be found in hotel residences apparently. I actually visited la citadelle last week and maybe it was because it was the middle of the day, but I really didn’t see any students hanging together…saw a bunch studying by themselves though.

Are you going into McGill next year too? Into the arts? Very glad to meet you! I am currently leaning toward Carrefour sherbrooke because I really do not want to cook…communal kitchen at la citadelle sounds terrifying…too many coos spoil the broth? At the same time I’d love living there. As of now I really like Carrefour Sherbrooke, RVC, la citadelle and greenbriar apartments.

PLEASE TELL ME YOU’RE COMING TO MONTREAL WITH ME NEXT YEAR?
Very nice to meet you!

I would not mind a roommate if I knew her but I thin I’d prefer my own room btw!

welcome to Quebec. you will love your time here if you are very politically motivated and engaged as im sure you have heard. but then again, it depends on what end of the political spectrum you adhere to!

I’m on the left side of the spectrum so I feel like I’ll fare well there. But I don’t know French I plan to learn it though. Thank you!!

I will be attending McGill next year the kitchen at la citadelle is actually really nice! though the communal fridge was filled with all kinds of things and smelled pretty bad haha no one was in there when I went either, but then again it’s probably more convenient to have lunch on campus. personally, I’d love to be able to cook some food once in a while that I may not be able to find around campus (I’m Singaporean and can’t live without Singaporean food for too long even though I live in the states haha)
if you don’t mind a roommate then I believe carrefour would be a great match! it’s also very close to la citadelle (I could see it across the street from the hotel where I stayed, which was literally next door to la citadelle).
have you taken a look at the different videos introducing the residences? they will definitely help you get a feel of the buildings a little!
on a side note, I’m probably more moderately to the right end of the political spectrum hehe…

Ohh great! Political diversity makes for great debates. Are you in second year? May I ask what you are majoring in?

Also, I thought there were single rooms for carrefour sherbrooke as well. Are there too few? I was really hoping for one!

Singaporean! How cool, see McGill has such interesting people!!! :D

@MakeADifference

well, thats a good start considering that youre more left-leaning…but it really depends on how left-leaning you are. where are you from? personally, i’m somewhat right-leaning especially on fiscal issues but more left on social issues and i’m telling you I can never catch a break in political debate regardless, i’m sure you’ll enjoy your time here. anyhow, don’t expect to become fluent in french especially if you plan to live in the mcgill bubble and in rez. it really is harder than it looks. it took significant time for me to even get by in french and i’m still not even completely fluent even after close to 2 years of french classes in school (they are mandatory where I go to).

food wise you’ll adapt. I know how hard it can be leaving all that great food behind in Singapore but don’t worry you’ll get over it and once you get back for the holidays…they taste even better otherwise, if you ever have a desperate craving…try googling satay brothers. good luck! its been 2 years since I moved here and i’m fine.

because of the number of credits I can get from APs, I’ll be considered U1 instead of U0 when I enter in the fall. I haven’t decided what I want to major in, but I’m debating between IDS, IR, and business administration/management/finance
according to the housing questionnaire, carrefour doesn’t seem to be offering single rooms this year…perhaps things are changing a bit since mcgill closing down Douglas this year for renovations.
personally, I’m not one for political debates xD especially seeing as how I am often conflicted myself over government related issues…
because I live in the states, I can fare without Singaporean food so there are no worries there haha however, if I do have access to a kitchen, I will definitely be bringing some food premixes with me >:)
do you know of any other Singaporean/malaysian restaurants in the area? just wondering :)

@Uni2013

Satay brothers is as authentic as you’re going to get in Montreal. if you’re going into U1, you cannot choose between IDS, IR and business/management/finance. you have to choose either one and that depends on what faculty you are admitted to. for instance, you cannot take finance or accounting specific classes if you’re in the faculty of arts for they are restricted only to Desautels students.

It’s nice to know that there are people just like me out there. I’m not much of a party person either and I do not drink at all. I am leaning towards living at Carrefour Sherbrooke, Greenbriar, and La Citadelle. Just not sure how I’ll be able to pay it off yet…

@EdDalton
I’ll be in faculty of arts, so I guess i’ll be choosing between IDS and IR then…Is there any possible way to do a combination of both? The academic programs for the faculty of arts website is kind of confusing me

@Kevinn95
I agree, it’s great to know more people like that! I guess I’m kind of cheating with being able to choose Carrefour, Greenbriar, and La Citadelle as among my highest choices since my dad’s work pays for 75% of all my school fees (including travel, tuition, room and board, books, etc.)…

@Uni2013

no, if you’re in the faculty of arts, you cannot possibly take any classes from desautels. the faculty of management is deregulated and hence the much higher tuition for international students.

but according to the website, IDS and IR are under faculty of arts…? O.o

This is found under IR, which is under Arts:

About Industrial Relations
Industrial Relations is an interdisciplinary program, enabling students in the Faculty of Arts to study Labour-Management Relations. Students take courses in Economics, Labour-Management Relations, and Sociology. These courses examine the economic and social forces affecting employer-employee relations in both national and global contexts.

Yes, IR and IDP are part of the faculty of arts. However, my point still stands that you cannot take classes in the desautels faculty of management (as you have mentioned earlier that you’d like to finance classes).

I know haha you pointed it out, so I replied saying that I’m now choosing between IDS and IR and will be taking classes associated with whatever I choose :)

I’m so g;ad to meet you guys here!! I am thinking about IDS too, including Poli Sci and Economics as well :)

Btw could you live at Carrefour and still take the mandatory meal plan? :)
