Really confused about transferring

Hey all,

I just finished my Freshman year at another Big Ten university but am not returning to that school in the Fall. I am a Minnesota resident and I am transferring to the U of M.

However..

I didn't know I was going to be transferring until the transfer app deadline has passed. I called the UMN admissions office and they told me that my GPA was a little bit low to be admitted but that I should apply to attend UMN starting Spring 2012 in CLA. He gave me a list of options and I have decided to attend UMN this fall in the College of Continuing Education (which does not require admission to the university, you just get verified and you register) and apply for the Spring 2012 term ASAP once classes start.

However, I'm confused how I can be admitted to CLA for the Spring term if my final grades for Fall 2011 won't exist at the time of application. How will they know if I'm getting the 3.0 they requested if the semester isn't even done?

Would it be wise to register for a class or two for the second part of the summer so I have something new to add to my application besides the slightly low GPA from my other school?

I'm just really confused and any advice is appreciated. Thanks so much!

It sounds like they suggested for you to apply for Spring 2012, because the deadline for Fall 2011 has passed. If you feel concerned about your chances of admittance in Spring 2012 and are comfortable with taking classes this summer, then I think that would help your chances, given that you do well in them. It also shows that you are taking your education seriously.

Best of luck!
