[REALLY CONFUSED KID] Don't know what to do, What college could I get into?

Freshman year, Sophomore year, 1st semester of junior year OVERALL GPA: 3.29
- Went to summer school for a D in Honors Geometry (Got a D freshmen year, went to summer school sophmore year)

I got a 4.0 gpa 1st semester and 2nd semester of junior year (School's out and about to be a senior next year)

My overall gpa is probably going to be around high 3.3's once I get my report card for this semester.

My classes junior year:
AP Human Geography
English
US History
Pre-Calculus
AP Psych
Anatomy

SAT: 1810 - 1st time 1870 - 2nd time
My ethnicity: African American
Income: Live in the rich part of town.. probably combined 200k
Extra curricular: 4 years of football, 4 years of baseball. Greyshirted (was injured for 1 year of each sport)
No jobs, no internships, 1 club (muslim association).

Highest gpa i got before junior year was 3.1
Pretty much turned it around after sophomore year as you can see..

I live in the bay area in california (near stanford and uc berkeley)

Now, my real question, what colleges can I get into?
Stanford is a longshot i'm guessing.. but is it possible for me to get in? I'm a minority and i turned it around for junior year..
UCLA maybe?
USC ?

Could I get into any one of those three colleges?
Also should I take the ACT or anything in september/october/november/ of senior year?

*And I went to Pakistan freshman year summer when floods happened and i helped people there
*My school is ranked in the top 50 in the USA (public school).. take that into account i guess.
*Anything else I could do?

BUMP Still want an opinion on this!

Those schools are waaaaaay out of your range. Look at the US News College Rankings and I think you should be looking at the schools ranking from 60-100

@oldboy

Your grades have come way up junior year, congratulations. Lots of work there!

You are picking “prestige” school names, and I am not sure why. More important than a well-known name is a great fit. What are you looking for in a college (now that you have some choices)? Small class sizes, athletics, merit aid, location, certain majors?

There are lots of very, very good schools out there where you would be successful. Broaden your field of search - it is OK to have a few reaches but it is sometimes harder to identify safeties and “good bets” where you will be happy and be successful.

Think about what WORKED junior year, and how to find that in a college, and within yourself.

@2prepmom Well I want to major in biology… Other than that I really don’t care.
Yeah i didn’t even think about my future freshmen and sophomore year…
I wish someone had told me that doing well in the first 2 years of high school would be beneficial in the long run… /:

You may wanna try the ACT, but studying will be the biggest help.
Also: Stanford really is a longshot

@theatlantic at the very least I want to go to ucla.
I want to leave this stupid city.

Are you looking for a highly competitive undergrad experience? Maybe a smaller more supportive school will help you excel more? Is graduate/medical school a possibility?

Take a look online at Pomona, UCSF, UCSD, Boulder, U Arizona, College of Wooster (Ohio), Amherst, Williams, Bates, Colgate, Dartmouth, U of Maryland, U of Michigan, Northwestern, U of Wisconsin so you get a feel for different sizes and locations. All have fine biology programs. Many more fine colleges to consider are out there once you figure out what you like…

Certainly try for reaches, but know that the most highly selective schools like Stanford turn down 50% of kids with perfect SAT scores, who are valedictorians with perfect GPAs. Work hard on your essays, it sounds like you are very bright and hardworking and had to overcome some obstacles to succeed (poor academic preparation for honors classes in the beginning maybe?)

@2prepmom thanks for the advice! Will do!
My mom is only letting me go to universities in california though /:

Stanford is unrealistic, though there are many schools you can get into, just find some schools that are more realistic. Also unless your mom is helping you pay you can go where ever you want…

Most of the schools you have mentioned are unrealistic…Stanford, Berkeley and UCLA…please speak with a college counselor at your school ASAP to generate a more realistic list. You have made improvements you should be proud of but don’t set yourself up for disappointment.

You should try the ACT. You may even try the SAT again after doing real practice tests to target improvement.

You’ve become a better student so another option is to get the best grades you can senior year, go to CC and earn good GPA to transfer to 4 year college.

When you say you at “least” want to go to UCLA are you aware that their 2013 admits had average GPAs of 3.8 UW and 4.4 W?

For CSU/UC they do not consider 9th grade scores. And for csu they look at sat math and reading score.

My son has 3.46 weighted and 1310 sat and we are looking at Cal poly Pomona, Fullerton as safe, long Beach, UC riverside as a reach and slo as a long shot.

It appears your scores are similar to my son and based on my research I would love him to go to the schools you mention, but this does not seem remotely possible.

Maybe get with your counselor at school for a second opinion.

Sent from my HTC One SV using Tapatalk 2

@sdgal2 Yeah but there’s always a few students that get in with a lower gpa then that…
I’m trying to be the ‘few students’

Will your mother allow you to attend a private in California? Or are you to stick to the publics?

You might have better private options with those grades. Stanford is just a wasted app for you. Sorry.

ETA: those few students will have exceptional ECs or artistic, or athletic talents. Or they will be developmental admits, as in: parents build the new library.

Good luck to you. You definitely need to talk to your counselor.

At this point, your focus needs to be on finding a couple of safety schools. These are your most important applications. You need to find two schools which will definitely accept you with your stats, which you can absolutely afford to attend and would be happy to attend.

Again, good luck.

@poetgrl Yeah basically any college in california…
So far I was going to apply to:
UCSB, UCLA, University of La Verne, USC, Stanford…

Well I raised 80,000 for my mosque… and I went to pakistan freshmen year to help with the flood damage…
In addition, I was going to center my essay on McDonalds… Well not my essay but my intro… and start it off a little unique… As I worked at mcdonalds for a short period of time…
I was going to tie it in to the whole ‘changed person’ thing and ‘wanted to be successful’ thing

Yes but the few students who get in with lower GPAs have valid reasons (moving around a lot, abusive parents, working several jobs to support their family and so on), from my understanding your GPA is low because you were lazy for two years…

@artsy true true. But what i mentioned in the post above yours. Will those help me?
When i write my essay.
