Okay, so I'm going to Rice University in the fall and am a bioengineering major. I chose this field because my strengths are math and science. The problem is that I don't know whether I want to be a lawyer or doctor (I know, two completely different fields). That is also a reason why I chose engineering, because I couldn't do premed track or a different field for the end goal of a lawyer. Does graduating as a bioengineering major down the line hurt my chances or help (for either med or law school)? I know that once I figure out what I want to do with my life I could change my major, but for now I'm a little worried because I'm so lost. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

In my opinion, the only way this major could hurt you is that it may lower your GPA, if this field isn’t exactly your strength, which would be important for both medical or law school if you decide to go down either route. Alternatively, the only way I can think of this major helping you would be if you decide not to pursue higher education, it may be easier for you to find a job with a bachelor’s. I doubt medical or law schools will care much about this particular major.

I would recommend you still work on completely the med school prerequisites, in case you decide to go that route, because there’s no particular reason why you can’t complete the prerequisites and still go to law school if you decide to. I would also recommend that you volunteer in a hospital or clinic setting, or get an internship or something in a law firm or office. You could also try to set up job shadows with doctors and lawyers to see which field you would rather pursue.

If you want to do law, you need a basic bachelors degree and you also need to take your LSAT.I don’t see a problem with you doing law after majoring in bioengineering or pre-med. But I don’t think majoring in bioeng is going to help you getting into a medical college later on.

Good luck with you college and decide fast :)

Thank you guys so much. So to summarize what you said in a nut shell: if I were to go to law school, I could major in anything to get in, so a bioengineering major wouldn’t hurt (except for the gpa aspect, which will hopefully go well with a lot of studying). As for if I wanted to go into medicine, it would probably be better for me to switch my major and follow the premed track, bc I need to take the premed prerequisites anyway, unless I choose to major in bioengineering and comPlete the premed prerequisites. Along with all of this, I need to shadow doctors and lawyers so as to make the best choice. I hope I just made sense… Lol

Yes, all of that was correct, especially about how you can major in anything for law. In general, law schools only care about your LSAT and GPA.

Would you ever want to just become an engineer? I would suggest majoring in Biomedical Engineering and trying to complete some pre-med requisites (which will be done after your freshman year) so that you can have three routes you can take. You can be an engineer, lawyer, or doctor but by the time you get to the point where you have to choose for law school or med school, you will probably already know what field you are leaning to.
