Really Depressed

This is just a guess, but the fact that the OP is from a high school in China might have affected admissions (ie there may be a certain quota for people applying from China). I know many schools handle applicants from abroad differently from their regular pool.

Another question to ask is how soon you can transfer to the main campus if you go to the branch?

A branch campus is not the worst option. You get much smaller classes than the main campus, and can build up a set of friends who can transfer with you to the main campus. It is much better than other types of transfers where students often feel left out socially because everyone made their friends in freshman year.

Thanks for all the input guys, I recall not explaining the repeating a year situation very clearly (I wrote my reasoning in the 250 character box), so I think when I email Pitt on Monday, I’ll try to explain that more clearly.
Congrats nextbestthing93 :), and thanks for the support! I feel better after reading that someone with close credentials as me got in Honors, and I hope that I still have a chance at getting into main.
I think I will try writing a personal statement about why I was held back. Do you guys think that it’d be too much to send in an explanation with the short e-mail to the admissions office to ask them to reconsider their decision?
Could admissions possibly have handled my application differently since I attended school in China? I still have residency in Pennsylvania and attended 9th grade/10th grade in the U.S., so they shouldn’t review my application differently should they?
Does anyone know if the teachers on branch campus are comparable to main campus? I’m not trying to say anything bad about branch schools or Bradford, but normally, aren’t the main campus teachers better? I really want to build up a solid foundation in biology and chemistry in undergrad, and I haven’t heard about how good the biology/chemistry department is at Bradford.
To Charlieschm, I didn’t think about the social aspect yet, so thanks for considering that too. Small classes do sound appealing, and being able to have a group of friends that are looking to transfer to main campus together sounds great! I’m worried that after transferring, there will be a big difference in the way my teachers teach the class and that it’ll be hard to adjust after spending a semester in a very different environment.

i didn’t hear anything about honors or scholarship $ when i was accepted, and i was surprised because i have received great offers from several other schools. i emailed and it turns out pitt places a heavy emphasis on class rank… my school district has a very unfortunate policy which actually penalizes students for taking the most rigorous course load, and that was counting against me heavily.

i am not sure if that might be a factor in your situation, but i would definitely send an email (or perhaps have your guidance counselor do so) and ask if there is anything you can do right now (semester grades, etc.) to change their decision. at least then you’d have a better idea of the reason for their action and can proceed based upon that.

If immike is a U.S. citizen with residency in Pa., I don’t think that having attended an international school in China would count against him/her. In fact, I think it would be a positive factor.

If you’re a PA resident then it shouldn’t have been because you’re going to school in China… what I was talking about would have been for people who aren’t citizens of the US. No use speculating then, maybe you’ll get a good explanation from OAFA after you write your statement.

In regards to having difficulty adjusting to main campus classes, I don’t think that would be a problem. Most universities work very hard to have integrated curriculum between their branches and main classes. The branches should be teaching the same intro classes with the same curriculum and same textbooks.

Hey guys, I’ve written my e-mail considering the reconsideration, but before I send it, would anyone be willing to read it and see if it makes sense? I feel like my transition into the reconsideration is rather abrupt and I don’t want to sound obnoxious or that I’m pleading for them to get me admission into the main campus.

Hey guys! I haven’t been able to get on for the last week cause of finals

I’d just like to tell everyone that I was accepted into the main campus
There seemed to be a miscommunication about my SAT scores, and luckily, the admissions officer I talked to was nice enough to look into the matter.

Thanks everyone for your support!

Congrats! Great news!

It is nice to know that mistakes are corrected! Good job asking about it.

Congrats Mike!

That’s great! Congrats on your acceptance to main campus.

Congratulations!!! Glad it all worked out! :)

Hey, I might be in a similar situation. I was asked to send a mid-year report, I had a 4.0, yet got rejected, no waitlist, etc, just a flat out rejection, why ask for a mid year report, if I was denied with a 4.0? It doesn’t make sense. Should I call admissions, and see whats up?

What were the rest of your stats iphonehacker

ACT - 31
GPA-(Fr-Jr) 3.1, First Semester this year - 4.0UW
Rank - 211/542

Sure I didn’t have the greatest stats from my past years, but Pitt asked me for my mid year grades, I had a 4.0, and got flat out rejected. What do they expect me to get? Why even send a mid year grade request?

Yes, call admissions to see if there’s a problem. I don’t see that asking you for midterm grades and then rejecting you with a 4.0 (assuming that’s the highest) makes any sense at all.

Thanks LurkNessMonster! How do you suggest I word my inquiry? Should I call or email?

I received a request for mid-year grades and a letter giving me the option for the wait list to school of engineering or accept admission to arts and sciences. I had a 3.35 freshman-junior and a 3.95 midyear senior grades with a 1290 M-CR SAT. I would call admissions and ask for an explanation then after they explain ask if there is a way to appeal. Good Luck!
