Really hard decision

Im a senior in highschool and i've studied hard to be accepted into a school with a good vet school. however, i found out this year that i dont want to be a vet and decided instead to go into theater and acting. My parents think im crazy because they think i have no chance of becoming an actor. Most of the colleges i have applied for are not known for their theater and arts program.
Cornell
Binghamton
Columbia
Stonybrook
Tufts
Boston College
Johns Hopkins
U Penn
I dont know what to do anymore. Become a vet and be miserable with my life but make alot of money or go into acting with a high probability of failure.

Maybe you could try going into acting, but getting a minor in something more practical in case acting dosn't work out? That's what I would do.

Do what you want to do. You have more chance of employing as actor, if you like it, than vet if you hate the job.

Well, my piano teacher is a pretty well known indie musician (well, depends on if you are into her genre, anyway)..and I'll tell you what she does b/c musicians have a high rate of failure like acting (maybe you can think in terms of acting? idk trying to help)...

She teachers kids on the side, goes into elementary schools and gives talks about being a musician, schedules own gigs, produces own cds (basically cutting out expensive "middle man"/agent of being a musician) until she got signed. She also has a friend who makes a lot of money doing accompaniment as a musician.

so maybe you could tutor kids (your colleges are pretty good haa) on the side (make big $$$)...get a job at like a movie theatre (not glamorous but you could do that at night and go to auditions in the day)

if you want to convince your parents, you just need to have a well-thought plan :) mwuhahha

what about a double major?
I'm going to double major in theatre and economics because of the "unrealistic factor" involved in theatre. also, having a second major to fall back on is good if acting doesn't work out.

Thanks for all your feed back so far. These are some good ideas

I would stick with becoming a vet (keep it as a mjor), and keep acting as a minor. If you really do like it, you can switch to your major. If it turns out you're not as good as an actor as you thought you'd be, you have something practical to fall back on. Becoming a vet couldn't be THAT bad; after all, you worked so hard to get to the point that you're already at with that goal.

Of course if you've had acting experience in high school, then go for it. From your post, I'm thinking that this was more of a whim.

And although it's nice to have your parent's blessing, it's ultimately what you want to do with your life. Although you are indeed in debted to your parents, you don't owe them your happiness.

I second the above post! Good Luck :)

Sungchul pretty much nailed it.

And I hope you'll find what you truly enjoy doing! =]

can't you do general studies for a couple of years, getting some science in there and thus leaving the door wide open

there aren't that many vet schools in the country

can't you go in undeclared?

ps as an owner of 4 dogs, I would not want someone taking care of my animals that didn't really want to do it

And beleive me, pet owners can sense if you like your job

and getting into the big animal vet stuff is really tough

i'd just try to get into the best college that you can. then once you're in, go from there. if they have acting, great, take some classes and see if you really like it. i've heard that most college students change majors a lot...so by the time you actually get to college you might not want to act anymore. either way, don't do something you don't enjoy.

I know that Northwestern has an amazing theatre school though I think its too late......but i still don't know why you would rather be an actor.....its a big buisness and is really hard to get a good break.....good luck in the future!
