I really messed up on first semester at uni, i scored a really low gpa (2.4) and I am going to buckle down and work very hard next semester to raise my GPA. Im planning on transferring schools after or during my sophomore year (freshman currently).

However, last semester I got caught for possession of marijuana, I asked the counselor about whether it would affect me in the future and he said it wouldn't since its my first offense and it was an in school issue. He also told me that when/if i applied to other schools (Transfer/graduate schools), they would only send my disciplinary record if it was asked for.
Im just worried that this incident will affect my transfer to another uni. If my record stays clean and I keep improving my GPA will they overlook this incident? What should i do?

thanks for any help you can provide!

You should stop smoking/doing anything else that’s illegal, and improve your grades, it’s the only way you’re going to be able to transfer.

Remember when you apply for a transfer, colleges usually don’t see your last semester of grades (eg. if applying for fall 2014, they will see your final fall 2013 and at most a midsem grade report for sp 2014) when they make a decision. Your best bet is to be patient, work hard and apply for a jr transfer.

I’m not sure how much I can help because I don’t know what type of schools you want to transfer into. But if you’re going to attempt to transfer to schools that accept the Common App, they will certainly ask your Department of Student Ethics (or a similar department) about your disciplinary record. You need to ask your counselor if that will show up, or if you can have it expunged from your record.

If the school sees it for whatever reason, it will have an impact, but there are obviously much worse disciplinary infractions. If you can demonstrate that you’re a good student this next semester and are significantly involved in extra-curricular activities, I doubt many admissions offices are going to hinge their decision on a one time brush with marijuana.

Yeah im planning on working really hard and joining more clubs and extracurriculars. Im planning on transferring to UC schools, NYU and USC in my junior year

should i ask before i apply or asap about getting the incident expunged? I feel like asking later would be better if i prove that ive changed?
