Really need help with choices

Actually, parent2005, among the Stern admits, about 80 out of 500 freshmen will be getting merit scholarships. And if they don't maintain a 3.5 gpa, some of them will lose it.

That's only 16%, so the remainder must be too wealthy not needing any scholarships?

parent2005, the Stern merit scholarships are not based on income, just on the student's application, and how desirable that student is to the school. And unfortunately there are many more deserving and smart students than the number of merit scholarships actually available.

Yes, we have also gone through the process of "expecting" merit scholarships, and sometimes being disappointed, and at other times pleasantly surprised.

Since you live in California, and UCLA is such a great school, at an attractive price, I don't see how you could go wrong there.

I called both USC and NYU to ask for scholarships, but was told that my daughter did not get anything since there were too many "outstanding candidates".

So if students want to study in the library in the evening, do they have to go far away? Probably depending on the location of the dorm since dorms are located everywhere?

Again, I would defer to current parents or students, but I would say that yes, the walk from dorm to library would likely be several city blocks, thorugh the surrounding neighborhoods. Possibly there are other places to study late at night and the walk to the library might therefore not be necessary in some circumstances--that is the kind of thing only a current student/parent would know.

She is going to Stern, and it's her choice.

Wow! That is great. I think she will love NYC, love living in the village.

Here is a map of NYU. http://www.nyu.edu/map/virtual.nyu

Click onthe buidlings to get the name of the building. Bobst Library is located on Washington Square South. Her resdience hall may be across the park or a few locks away. It is a well lit, well poluated place in the evenings.

(I lived in the East Village, Alphabet City, for a few years).

Congratulations, parent2005.
The good thing is that she does not have to make her dorm selections yet. There are 8 libraries at NYU, so I am sure there is always a library near enough to a dorm.
