Really nervous about applying

Hi everyone,

I just got back my ACT scores and I scored the same from the PSAE compared to the June 8th one. Got a 22 simple as that considering the fact that I didn't practice at all for the second one.

PSAE ACT: 22
E: 21
M: 24
R: 19
S: 22

June ACT WITH WRITING: 22
E: 20
M: 24
R:23
S:22

WRITING:10 (even though the writing doesn't matter at all for UIUC)

I am an uprising senior in the IB Diploma Programme and just finished taking

IB English HL
IB History HL
IB Spanish HL
IB Math Studies SL (1 year)
IB ITGS SL (1 year)
IB Biology SL
IB TOK

Last final grades for 2nd semester I got straight A's.

Next year I'll take

IB English HL
IB History HL
IB Spanish HL
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
IB Biology SL
IB TOK

IDK what my final GPA and class rank is so far but from semester 1 of junior year I was 4 out of a class of 320 and have an unweighted GPA of 3.91

Overall how good are my chances of getting into UIUC LAS (majori Chem) for now? What are my chances of getting placed into DGS? (basically a chance me) PLEASE!!

Thanks!

Hi, I am still a junior and will be a senior next school year (in high school) and I have done a few chance me on this forum section for UIUC. I can say that your course load for next year is great and so is your GPA. However, you should bring up the ACT score to at least 25 composite but UIUC doesn’t just look at your ACT so you should stock up on some extra curricular activities to show that you are a well-rounded student. Also, if you’re planning on apply to chemical engineering, all I can say is that it is really competitive to my knowledge and that from their website, the students who were accepted had ACT scores of 30+. Bring up your ACT score and you should be fine! Good luck.

Nrperez, You might want to try taking the SAT test, also. My kids took both the ACT and SAT. The tests are different and each of my kids clearly did better on one test than the other. My daughter submitted only the ACT score to her college and my son submitted only the SAT score. This is interesting because looking at the information about the tests, I would have guessed that each of them would have done better on the opposite test. I was quite surprised. Might be worth a try for you.

Thanks for the responses both of you greatly appreciate it!

@upreyez I really want a 25-27 that’s my goal so hopefully by september i’ll have it or something relatively closer. I actually do have some EC’s on board (student council for two organizations (President and Treasurer) also working in a lab currently at uchicago, worked as a budget for this STEM middle school kids program last summer at the Illinois Institute of Technology, etc). I also got my report card back and got straight A’s i can say for sure now so my UW GPA went up higher than a 3.91 and my Weighted GPA is a 5.00. I’m 3 of 320 now too.

UIUC uses your class rank as a factor. Since it is the flagship university for the state, it is important that they take students from all over the state. Therefore, if your class rank is high, then your ACT score may not have to be that high. However, to get into the college of Engineering you need to show that you can handle the math and the tests are a reasonable predictor of that.

Follow the link to see the ACT and SAT scores for the admitted class of 2012.

[U</a> of I Admissions: Freshman Admission Requirements](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)

Note, this was 2012. The 2013 admission season saw record applications and even higher standards for some fields. But, in 2012, the middle 50% of LAS admits had ACT score of 27-32. This means 75% of the class was 27 or higher.

I know the others on this post have tried to give you hope and tell you ACT is not the only factor and you have other wonderful credentials, which is true. However, ACT is an important factor, so unless you meet a special criteria (such as scholarship athlete), you need to get the ACT score up much higher than 22, because there are many applicants with similar GPA and activities who have 27+ ACT scores.

I am sorry to rain on your parade, but I must be honest. You will need to do some serious ACT or SAT preparation to get your score up and get admitted to UIUC. I hope you take this as a challenge and do the work so you are admitted. Best of luck.

Given your outstanding GPA, they’ll give you some wiggleroom on your ACT score. Your ACT score doesn’t seem to reflect your abilities as evidenced by your GPA, which took 3 years of effort to achieve. What happens with many people is that the same focus, time and effort to get those good grades works against them in a timed test. When this occurs, familiarization with the test through repeated practice test taking usually helps. If you have the money, tutoring can efficiently identify what the issues are in your particular case that are preventing you from doing well, and really focus the practice and guidence to those specific areas.

My daughter had a 26 composite from the April ACT. After tutoring, for just 16 hours, she raised her composite 4 points. She’ll be retaking the ACT in September to see whether she can boost it another couple of points, since her science wasn’t up to her usual average. She said the science portion was exceptionally tough this time around.

Even with the high GPA, if you don’t increase that standardized score a bit, your chances for direct admission to chem would have to be classified as a reach, and DGS is likely a reach to slight reach. Do apply however, no matter what. It’s the only way to know for sure.

I agree and disagree I met with the admissions counselor for UIUC at Chicago in my neighborhood and we went over mock admissions. I would not have the most definite chances of getting in but I have the chances. A kid this year got accepted into the college of engineering with an ACT score of 25 and good grades. However in comparison to my grades, I painted a better picture. However I do agree that there is a look over ACT scores however like Balthezar said it is not the ONLY thing they look at. Everyone can tell me the honest truth but people who got accepted like the kid with a 25 into Engineering is the type of things that give me hope.

@Balthezar

Thanks Balthezar I can COMPLETELY agree with you. Your daughter is of sure a more than a good chance to get accepted into the University. Thanks for your words of wisdom.
