I know that universities have scholarships specifically for their school/certain majors. How do I apply for these? Or am I automatically considered once I apply? I see a lot of people’s admission posts about how they get into schools with some tuition waived on behalf of merit. Did they apply for that seperately? Thanks!
There is no single answer that is applicable to 3000 plus colleges.
What college/major?
Some schools will give automatic merit for students with certain ACT/SAT scores, National Merit, etc. Others have merit scholarships for different talents (Music, Art, STEM, etc.) Others have X number of scholarships per division, department, school, etc. Some merit scholarships require additional applications and/or nominations, while others are granted by the Admissions Office.
You need to be way more specific.
Your stats usually have to put you in the top 25% of admitted students to get any merit. For big merit usually the top 5-10%.
Check out the websites for schools you are interested in. Scholarship opportunities vary from school to school.
Spend a lot of time researching each school you plan on applying to. Understand their particular rules applying to scholarships. Some schools don’t let scholarships exceed tuition. Some will allow multiple scholarships to stack to cover full cost of attendance. There is no single answer.
It takes hrs or read admission and dept websites to determine what scholarships they have. If you have questions, contact the admissions office or dept and ask.
Check the school’s web sites.
Each school has their own application procedure. Some would automatically consider merit aid, some don’t. For major/program specific scholarships, you will likely need to declare that major to be eligible to apply and that would be usually for sophomore and above.
As you read the application procedures, do look for application deadlines.
