There might be some good sales still leftover from Christmas if you jump on it, it could still be worth it to check out the more expensive brands/stores. I bought some vera wang jeans last week, normally way out of my price range, for like $20-$30. I got two pairs of dress pants, a sweater, two tops, and a suit coat for under $100 at JC Penney before Christmas. It’s unfortunate you missed that wave but there may still be some lingering sales if you check around, maybe make some phone calls and see what’s out there.

Why don’t belts work? If you find a pair of pants that fit well everywhere except the waste, couldn’t a belt suffice?

TwistedxKiss–thanks so much! Unfortunately none of the JCPenney dress pants are small enough in waist size for me! But I’ll check out the possible sales times and dates for Banana Repbulic and Ann Taylor. :D

NonAntiAnarchist, the belts tend to create bunching issues with dress pants. I mean, I’d literally have to take off an INCH or more at the waist for size 0 or size 00 dress pants (again, depends on where I buy those dress pants).

Since I’m a runner, my legs are fairly developed in comparison, so I can get by with a belt while wearing tight jeans, since the jeans cling to my thighs very well. BUT, dress pants don’t have that effect…so everything just sorta…hangs. Yuck. It’s even worse with girls’ dress pants, as well. Ahhh. Help.

I have two tiny girls and have been down this road. It is very difficult to find dress pants. For inexpensive pants, your best bet is the Juniors Dept. at Kohls. For higher quality (but not too expensive) go to The Limited. They make dress pants in size 0 short!!! I highly recommend the Limited pants and if necessary have them tailored to fit you. You will be far better off with one or two pair from Limited and tailored than with several pair of ill-fitting pants.

Express has tiny sizes.

Just tried Express…all their pants were at least 2-3 inches too big at the waist. Dammit! Junior’s department at Kohl’s = too big, also.

Should I just give up and get my dress pants tailored? If so, can someone help me out…I have no idea what getting stuff tailored involves! Would I have to take in room at my thighs and the rest of the pants’ legs, just at the waist, at the bottoms?! Help! And where can I find a good, cheapish tailor? Are these usually at malls, as chains, or independent little shops?! How much should I expect to pay, and how?

J. Crew will do free alterations for clothes bought in store or shipped to store. Their petites can only be bought online, but if you go to the store, the sales staff will help you figure out what size you need. If you are a student, and have your college ID card, you also get a 15% discount.
My daughter is 5’1" and even most petite pants are stlll too long for her. I am 5’8" and guess what, I now have to get almost all of my pants shortened since they are just making pants longer and longer. 20 years ago, I never had to get anything altered, but as women are getting taller, I am not so off to the tailor I go!

^ Thanks for the tip on J-Crew. I think I’ll buy some pants from j-crew sometime.

@Alix2012: I don’t like getting my pants hemmed since the tailoring usually costs more than the pants themselves haha.

Last week I went shopping at Macy’s for dress pants during their one day sale. I looked around the petite women’s section and it took about 10 pairs of pants till I found one that was actually a suitable length. (All sizes were 4P, but a lot had long lengths) They were Michael Kors for $11.00. :)

I need to shop wherever you shop then because I am 6’ and VERY, VERY rarely do I find pants long enough for me, and they seem to be getting shorter and shorter all the time :(.

Check out the Ann Taylor Loft clearance racks. My daughter is about your size and she is sometimes able to get some really good buys there in dress pants. I recall her getting a lined woolen pair for under $40.

You could also go into the store (Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft) to try on the full priced stuff to establish your style/size and then order the sale priced stuff online.
