really unbalanced stats?

I have mostly A's in my humanities classes from freshman year on (excluding a B in World Studies freshman year - I had a horrific teacher who was fired after I had her - and a B in French last year, which was completely my own fault) but the only A I have in math/science is from Chem in sophomore year. Similarly, I got perfect scores on the Reading and English sections of the ACT and the Critical Reading section of the SAT, but scored below my desired range in math (26 on the ACT, 670 on the SAT). All of my academic ECs are humanities-based, and I don't plan on majoring in anything that requires math or science, but do I have no shot at very selective schools because of this odd discrepancy?

If by very selective you mean the ivies then you don’t have much chance. They have other applicants with strong stats across the board. Unless you have a hook or some amazing ECs you are digging out of a whole.

I would be more optimistic than the previous poster. Your situation is not an “odd discrepancy”. It occurs often, and often it’s in reverse where applicants have very strong math/science scores and good (but not stellar) humanities scores.

Your 670 SAT math score is a good score. Your humanities scores can more than compensate for the score not being still higher

Ultimately your application is not simply about scores. It depends on your full record – including recommendations, achievements, ECs. If they showcase you as an exceptional writer, or someone with strong analytic skills, or strong art skills, etc. then you may very well be a strong candidate for even the most selective college.

In your application focus on your strengths and don’t make a point of “weaknesses” in science/math.

i too would say you WOULD have as shot

Erin’s Dad: I don’t mean Ivies. My highest reach is UChicago (which I know is a very, very selective school, and it would require a miracle for me to get in)

fogcity and NervusBreakdown: thanks very much. I have several leadership positions and my recs should be great (fingers crossed), so I guess there’s hope for me yet. ;]

You have a good shot. Not a lock. But a really, really good shot!

My D had similar stats (not quite as good in math SAT–like low 600s); but she had perfect HS grades. She got in some big reaches–top 25 LACs, UNC oos, etc. And got offered nice merit at some others (which she took). Only rejection was from an Ivy, which she just tried on a lark ‘in case’.

If you are a good writer, it will help! I think D’s stellar writing on essays and perfect/near perfect CR/writing scores helped them overlook the low-ish math.

My advise, keep a couple reaches in, and be sure you have some options that are financial safeties–unless money is not an issue at all. You’ll find lots of places where you could get merit aid with your stats.
