ok so this might be pretty confusing but please bare with me.. im a senior in h.s right now and will be graduating this june ive always wanted to attend fsu in florida. my trhing is that i live in another state and ive been looking at the out of state tuition and its way to much so what ive been thinking is that maybe i can go down to tallahassee go to a cc over there while i get my residency get a job,an apt, license and everything else i might need to show that i am i resident over there, while my first year i would go to tcc and then transfer to fsu hopefully with in state tuition then. my thing is i will completely be living on my own (my mom is waiting for me to turn 18(oct 5th) and get out the house and figure things out on my own she already has said she WILL NOT help me in any way or form that im on my own) i have some money i get when i turn 18 around 19,000, i know in reality thats not alot of money but i guess its a start for something. so my question is ...

can i go to a cc in florida while im getting my residency stuff and everything or do i have to miss a whole year of college while i get my residency then apply(i really dont want to miss a year)

Florida law is similar to that of other states, in that it states that if you move to Florida with the sole intent of attending a state college you should expect to pay out-of-state tuition. For example look at:

What may get in the way in your plan is your intent to attend a CC while you “establish” residency – especially if you effectively attend full-time. Your main goal is to obtain a full time job in Florida, and be in Florida for 12 months while you live and work there. You would need to verify that through tax statements and etc.

You would need to move to Florida 12 months BEFORE you plan to enroll in college…get a job, rent a place, and show evidence that you are self supporting and maintaining your residence in FLORIDA. You need to change your driver’s license, and car registration and insurance. Your parents CANNOT declare you as a dependent on their taxes. It’s not as easy as it sounds.

The above might get you instate status for tuition purposes.

It will NOT get you independent status for financial aid purposes. You will be REQUIRED to list your parents’ income and assets of the FAFSA form which is what you will submit for consideration of financial aid. You will NOT be considered independent for financial aid purposes as an undergrad unless you are 24 years old, have a bachelors degree, are a veteran, are an orphan or ward of the state, are a veteran, are an emanicpated minor (very difficult to obtain), are married, or have a dependent child who you support. So…you may find that you have instate status but still no way to pay the cost of attending the college AND funding your living expenses.

I strongly suggest that you broaden your college list…
the plan that you have in mind is not necessarily very safe…
what about looking at some good private colleges that offer aid / are need blind? you might get a full ride…
begin with your apps asap.

I think my question to jessfonseca is why do you want to go to FSU so bad? I have nothing against you making such a move, I just think you should know exactly why you want to go there. Is it because they rank high in a certain major your interested in? Have you spoken with FSU financial office to see if they would offer you the right financial aid so you wouldn’t have to go to TCC? I just feel you should make yourself aware of the good and bad of making such a move before you make your decision. Maybe do like others have said and look at in state universities in your state( if you haven’t already). Good luck! :)
