Essay - I plan on writing about how my GPA is low due to a medical illness i had causing depression. After finding a donor, I decided I wanted to become a doctor and worked hard for SAT and such.

OK SOOO, I know my GPA is really low and am not sure how much good SAT,good essay, good EC's would make up for it..but I just want to know what "kind" of school I should apply to. ( As far as selectivity goes)

ALSO..im out-of-state. Is that looked down upon by state schools?

Well you look pretty solid. What is your UC gpa? 3.0 still? Technically, you are not even considered out of state unless you have a minimum of a 3.4. You have exceptional SAT scores and quite possibly will sneak in because of them. Your EC's are excellent too. I recommend talking to your counselor about your interest in the UCs or maybe call up UCSC and ask them about your situation. They are really attracted to students that have gone through rought times, so you gain serious points there as well.

Im not sure what you mean by UC. I have a 3.0, when I take out my electives and my 10 AP points. (My school adds 10 points to the final avrg of you AP classes)
And are you saying that my application wont even be considered to be read if I don't meet that GPA requirement?

To find your UC GPA, count all of your classes as if they were regular, non-weighted classes. So a C in an Ap class is worth 2 pts, a C in a regular/honors class is worth 2 points. After you have your unweighted GPA, add 8 points to your score if you have taken at least 8 semesters of AP classes, which it sounds like you have. So if you have an unweighted gpa of 80 out of 100...3.4, then your UC gpa is a 88/100, or a 3.52.

And to your question. The UCs say specificly that a UC gpa of 3.4 is required to even be considered for admission. Like I said, you have a lot of things going for you and they may make an exception. Talk to some people who know more about this issue.

i think you have a really good chance of getting in.
i got in UCSC with 3.08 weighted UC GPA, 1870 SAT, average 760 SAT IIs, and a good essay explaining why my GPA was so low.

because u have a much higher SAT than me, and a pretty good reason for getting low GPAs, i think you'll definitely get in.

i think the minimum GPA thing is just for shows, because i know someone got in to UCSC with 2.6 GPA and 2100 SAT and some good ECs.

the out of state thing:
i think its a state requirement or something of the sort that 80% of the applicants must be californians and up to 20% are out of state which means... it might be harder to get into but i dont know how much harder.

Well although you got your G.P.A working against you man, with all the other stuff you got going for you, your extra currics, SAT's and hopefully a good personal statement, would make up for it and hopefully get you in.

that 3.4 is a hard floor for out of state applicant GPAs. Before you go to too much time and trouble, I would contact the admissions office directly. Bottom line it for them: "I have very high SAT, but below the 3.4 out of state gpa requirement. Will my application even be considered?"
