Essay - I plan on writing about how my GPA is low due to a medical illness i had causing depression. After finding a donor, I decided I wanted to become a doctor and worked hard for SAT and such.

OK SOOO, I know my GPA is really low and am not sure how much good SAT,good essay, good EC's would make up for it..but I just want to know what "kind" of school I should apply to. ( As far as selectivity goes)

I would really like to go to:

Emory U
Boston U
Baylor U

THANKS for your help...just really need to know what kind of school would be likely to accept.

Also..I live in GA..does tht matter when it comes to admissions..since Emory is in GA

The GPA is definitely gonna hurt. I'll say in at Boston U not sure about the other two.

I think you're in. You've got the hook- 1st gen, you've got the test scores, and you've got the location (being from GA helps).

Oh ok thanks,
I dont mean to sound like im obsessing over it. But would you say its a "safe bet" for me for Boston U. I know there selectivity has increased and like you said that GPA is going to be a problem.

The one above this was meant for gboldman.

lol How does being from GA help? Just wondering.

Thanks. The thing is, those SAT scores are good, but they're not like GREAT compared to Emory's student body. I figured if your GPA is below there average your SAT has to be well above there aberage as well. Not sure, I'm pretty unaware about these things.

Well, look at my profile and you'll get an idea of how a low GPA student can get into Emory. Of course, I'm not a perfect candidate to compare, since my GPA was 3.4, which in itself is low. Since you have a legit reason and not just irreverence, I think it might compare. I don't know, but just look.

dude you'll easily get into Baylor, but i'm not so sure about pre-med since a lot of smart but frugal students are looking to get in.
I donno a lot about Boston U.
I think you have a fair chance of getting into Emory, if not, Oxford college. Raise up ur SAT scores just to be on the strong side since ur GPA is on the weak side despite the reason u have. Definitely show a lot of interest too since Emory is famous for having Tufts-syndrome. Also have ur counselor write a note about ur medical situation. But u better rock on that essay.

Thanks, I will say though, your resume is quite a bit better than mine but thanks. Emory and Boston U are my reaches as of now. I heard that Oxford at Emory (the undergrad 2-yr college) is easier to get into but im not a big fan of the whole 2-yr concept...plus they only have an undergrad population of 700.

thanks, I know Baylor isn't too hard to get into, it's just my GPA thats always making me second guess my chances. I don't really like Oxford, just because of the very small student body but almost every one from Oxford goes to Emory after the 2 years. Thanks for the help though, do you go to Emory or Baylor?

also from what i have heard from people that got into emory is that they really like if you show a lot of interest in the school (visits, meeting with alumni, student, professors, etc.). If you go to their application on their website they have boxes for each thing that you do that they consider showing interst.

i also considered the oxford route instead of emory if i don't get in. However it seems many people look down on the oxford kids so i probably won't apply there
