Really want to go to CUNY Brooklyn College

To keep it short and simple, I really want to go to Brooklyn College. It's a beautiful campus, they have a nice selection of classes for my intended major and I just love it. However, it's one of the competitive CUNYs to get into now.

My SAT scores aren't that great: CR: 560 M: 430 W: 600

Most of the CUNYs don't even accept the Writing, so my combined CR+M score is 990 and Brooklyn College says that at least 1000 is eligible for admission. (The median is about 1130). It really sucks because the only thing absymal is my Math score :(

I emailed the director of undergraduate admissions and told her my interest in the school and my dilemma and her response was that I take the SAT or the ACT again to see if I can get a higher score.

The problem with this is that I've already taken the SAT three times and the ACT twice, and only two SATs counted for anything. My mom paid for all those tests and I just hate to bother her with paying for another one :/ Forget about my dad, he didn't even understand why I took five tests, he would've rather I had taken two.

I guess what I'm asking is should I try to ask my mom if I can taken another SAT or should I ask the director of admissions the qualifications for a conditional acceptance? I'm just really afraid to take another SAT because I REALLY suck in math and I don't want to wind up with a bad score and waste my mom's money again 'cause she really does not deserve that....

Thanks in advance!

First of all, even though you have a 990, you can still get accepted! I know people with lower SATs than you and got in. What is your GPA? They tend to care more about your GPA, regents more. Honestly, relax and you will get in. Are you low income? if yes you can apply for SEEK and see if you can get in through there.

Thanks so much for your response! You give me hope :D

My gpa is an 81, so I pretty much barely meet the criteria, but I meet it nonetheless! I’ve passed all my regents also! (Well, not the physics…but I still get the Advanced Regents Diploma!) Do you think I should take the SAT again just in case? And no, I am not low income, but money is still tight in my house. I wouldn’t qualify for the SEEK unfortunately.

If you can pass High School, you can definitely get into a 4 year CUNY college. Brooklyn isn’t that hard to get in. 81 is better than a 75. I know people with worse stats and got in. So yeahh I do have faith in you. Hopefully they will take you. Did you apply to other CUNYs too? like CSI? they have a nice big campus too in SI.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much!!!  This has been stressing me out since October whew

I didn’t apply to CSI unfortunately and I’m SO upset because I just found out that it has my major! (BS in Psychology). I don’t want to mess with my application though so :/

I applied too City (hope I get in there too), Hunter (I already know I’m not gonna get in lol), Queens (also hopeful), John Jay (ehh), and York (I would never go here lol).

Did you get a response yet?

Not from Brooklyn…but I got accepted to John Jay and York. Rejected from Queens yesterday…things aren’t looking too good.

CUNYs can be very random.

I’d suggest starting at community college first. Get a good GPA and then see where you can transfer to. The price is almost the same and you will get into a CC.

I can’t go to community college, my parents would never accept that nor do I want to or need to. Besides, I already got into eleven colleges, I just really want to go to Brooklyn College.

I got a rejection email from Brooklyn College today. The undergraduate admissions director wrote and told me if I want them to re-evaluate my application, I should send them an updated high school transcript and/or new SAT/ACT scores. I have until July 11.

Now I have a new dilemma–since I still want to go here, and I have another chance, I am most definitely sending them my updated transcript (which is really good), but I don’t know if that alone will get me accepted. So I’ve been thinking maybe I should take another SAT after all, just to raise my Math to 500. But the next SAT is May 4–three days after the national deadline for all college deposits. And these deposits are non-refundable. I don’t know what to do now…

Should I just send them my updated transcript and hope for the best? Or should I send them my transcript AND take the SAT in May, putting down my deposit for a school just in case? Or should I not put down a deposit and just hope I get accepted to Brooklyn…? That would be a dumb thing to do, but I don’t want to waste money on a deposit if I wind up getting accepted.

Any thoughts?

I know you really want to go to Brooklyn college and are tempted to not send a deposit elsewhere but what if they don’t change the decision? I would say ask the Admissions director if the transcript would be enough or if they need an SAT to reconsider and if the final decision would be available before or after May 1st? If it is after, please send your deposit to your 2nd choice school and wait for Brooklyn’s final decision. If you get into Brooklyn and decide to go there instead you’ll definitely forfeit the deposit but is better to forfeit the deposit than to end up with no choice.

Just wanted to update, since it’s been such a long time–I did retake the SAT and got a better score. My gpa has also improved and I have sent both my scores and final transcript.

I’ll hear from the Appeal Committee in about two weeks :)

I got accepted!!! & i will be attending!!!
:d thank you guys for all the help! <3333

Congrats!!!

Congrats!!! Happy for you!!

Thank you so much <333 School starts in less than 3 weeks, so extremely excited :D

Hi, I would like to know if you still read this forum. If yes, please let me know. I have the same dilemma, I would appreciate if you would answer some of my questions about your acceptance to Brooklyn College. Love this school, and really want to go there.
Thank you.)

Hi there so by now you are a sophomore at Brooklyn college. Congrats! My son is waiting for his decision -it’s the last one. He hasn’t done so well with his other choices and we’re really hoping this is it. When you were emailing with the admissions director directly, were you met with any resistance? We have thought about doing so but are afraid it may backfire somehow. If you are still reading this board, would love to hear from you. Thanks.
