ECs- 4 years on scholastic bowl team, 2 as varsity captain. joining debate team this year, probably varsity captain. Medical Honor Society and National Honor Society member. Junior Prom committee last year. I'm on the city's Mayor's Youth Council and attended by invitation a meeting with the Governor on the state of high school education.

Work Experience: I have 200 or so hours volunteer work teaching horseback riding to elementary school aged children (including 100 with mentally handicapped kids) and now do so for pay (6-8 hours/week). I'm a camp counselor/barn manager during the summer. I've broken & started training several horses for pay.

Summer Stuff: Last summer I attended the Governor's Foreign Language Academy for German Immersion

That's the message. You're IN. Enjoy.

Where are you in VA? My D did the VA Governor's School for Humanities rising jr. summer.

I'm in VB. The 4 hour drive is one of the biggest points for W&L...far enough for me, close enough for mom :P

Also, I've heard that they give excellent merit aid to qualified students. My family is in that grey area where we don't really qualify for need-based, but DEFINITELY can't afford private tuition...
What are my chances for a great merit package?

I don't evaluate chances but make sure you read over everything about the George Washington Honors Scholarship. The key thing to remember is that the deadline is December 15th for your ENTIRE application - including teacher recs, transcript, SAT scores, etc

I'm going in for my interview tomorrow...wish me luck!

A little update: I visited, interviewed, toured, and fell in love with Lexington and the campus!

what kind of questions did they hit you with?

The interview was TOTALLY informal. The admissions counselor was young and really friendly. We mostly just talked about my interests, in and out of school. I talked about my passion for horses and asked about the riding team, asked about the strength of their science department, talked about undergrads doing research, etc. I was SO worried that I would get nervous and freeze up, but she was just so laid back about the whole process that I forgot it was an interview.
I recommend anyone interested in W&L schedule an interview and a tour! I feel much better about the school now
