Really worried upcoming Junior?

Hi, I'm going into my Junior year and lately I've been really worried about whether or not I'll get into the colleges of my choice. I would really appreciate it if you guys could just take a look at my stats so far to see if I look like I'm on the right track for the following schools:

Stony Brook University
Binghampton SUNY
Metropolitan College of New York
CUNY City College
University of Connecticut
West Chester University of Pennsylvania
University at Buffalo

Projected GPA: 3.7 uw/4.2 w; most rigorous courseload available with the exception of math; school does not rank

ACT: 30 (didn't take yet; based off of barrons' practice tests)
SATII: Didn't take yet

Extracurriculars:

Astronomy Club (President)
National Honor Society
Spanish National Honor Society
Spanish tutor
Nursing Home Volunteer (150+ hours by the time of graduation)
Writing workshops & Writing Contests (some national and some local)
Fingerstyle guitar (composer)
Classical Piano
Linguistics (French, Italian)

I love languages, writing, and the humanities. I plan on majoring in English Literature.
I just feel as though my ECs don't show much passion. My GPA as of right now is a 3.5/3.8 so I'm kind of worried about gaining admission to these schools. Of course I have an upward trend as the years go on, but I did get one C in math this year (my worst grade of all - everything else has been mostly A's with a few B's) and I feel that it's ruining my chances.

My questions are these:

1) I have grades of mostly A's with a few B's, and ONE single C. Will the C really affect my chances of getting into any of these schools?

2.) Do you think that my extracurriculars show enough passion or do you think that they look like a laundry list?

I'd REALLLLYYYY appreciate some feedback because I'm really really worried. Thank you SO much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,
Brooke Taylor

Any of you lovely 65 people care to share your opinions?

You have enough time that you should not be really worried. A C will not sink you, but make sure to bury it with good grades your junior and senior year.

Also, your ECs are fine for the moment. The term passion is thrown out a lot, but I think leadership is more accessible. You are the president of a club, so that is beneficial. Perhaps, you could start a linquistics club. If you plan to be a vet, you could focus your volunteering towards that path.

As for your college selection, your list is not recognizably hard to get into, but it appears you would be OOS. Is Florida your state of residence? I am not sure if any of these colleges require the SAT subject tests.

Above all, focus on raising your GPA. A few Bs and a C will not destroy your life, but they are avoidable. Also, do you want to take the ACT because you don’t like math? There is nothing wrong with this, but I would take the SAT as well, since you are not from the midwest (where the ACT is predominant)
By the way, which UPenn does your username refer to?

Good luck!

Try to find some sort of way to stand out. Again, since you like languages, try entering a few language bowls. To be honest I do not think just one C is going to affect you, just try your best from junior year: here on out. Don’t just join a club because you think this is what the college admission officers want to see. They want to see that you are exhibiting passion and you are giving 100% of yourself in everything you do. If you enjoy all the clubs you’re in, then do it. Also, try taking a couple of SAT subject tests for junior year and focus on getting high scores on them. Don’t worry :)

*Binghamton

JuniorMint - I was actually thinking of starting a linguistics club! However, the problem is that I don’t think many people, if any, will join. I have a knack for linguistics and I am trying to find a way to demonstrate my passion for it. I love nature, writing, history, art - just the humanities in general. I thought that maybe I’d go on one of the student expeditions with National Geographic, however it turns out that that is an unrealistic dream because my parents don’t have the money. I thought “hey you know, this will be the bulk of my extracurriculars” because it would demonstrate my love for writing, nature, and exploring all in one. So needless to say, it sucks.

I am from Florida! I was thinking that, because I’m from one of the best private schools in my area, I would have a greater chance of getting in. What do you think? Will it really have much of an effect on my chances? I’ll apply ED to one of these schools as soon as I decide on my first choice. I love them all.

I took the PSAT and let’s just say that I didn’t receive such a great score. I simply despise that test and prefer the ACT so much more because of the fact that it’s more formulaic and straight-forward. I don’t know…it’s funny because I’m more of an abstract thinker but yet I find that the ACT is more suitable for me.

And, regarding your question on UPenn, I wanted to go to Penn (University of Pennsylvania) a couple of years ago for pre-vet but I have realised that I simply have no chance due to my grades in math.

I really appreciate that you’re taking the time to answer me! If you have any other advice please tell me as it is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you soooo much!!! :)

Sincerely,
Brooke

Bump!!!

I wanna apply for University at Buffalo too! And I’m going into my junior year

That’s awesome Devonte!!! What are your stats, of you don’t mind my asking?!

I’m just wondering why you want to go to a city college on New York… Usually people try to avoid those schools.

Not to mention you are out of state… So the cost is a bit more than instate students

You’re well over-qualified for Buffalo, haha.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you want to go there? The low cost really only applies to in-state people. But yeah, the average ACT for UB is like a 25-26 so you’ll be around the 75th percentile if you get a 30 and if you get a 31 you may even qualify for the honors program. Your GPA is more then fine also. The only thing is that colleges like Stony Brook place a strong emphasis on math but I still think you have a really good chance of being admitted.

These schools don’t require anything special in terms of ECs. You have more than enough. Just focus on keeping your grades up through junior year, keep doing the ECs that you already do, and try to get a 30+ ACT and you should have no problem getting into any of these schools. In fact, I bet you’ll get into at least one or two of the honors programs at these schools.

Well :
GPA On a 4.0 scale
3.8 but it probably changed but I didn’t get my last report card yet

ECs:
Glee club
Spring musical and fall play
Poetry monologue club
August wilson monologue competition
Chess club

I plan on doing more next year

I’ve worked at Day camps and I’ve tutored. Also, I have a lot of volunteer experience!

Haven’t taken SAT Or ACT But I will in October.

I have a really close friend going to University at Buffalo for Musical Theatre! She has a 95% average.

Ya umm…you can do better than the schools you listed!

Kimmylouie, yankeesfanatic - I want to go there because I despise living in suburban Florida and want to go back up north where I came from. I love NYC, Pennsylvania, New England, all of those states…they just make me happy and that’s where I’d like to spend my college years :). My family can’t afford the $25,000+ a year schools and won’t let me take loans so I’m limited to the $20,000 and under price. I have researched and the schools that I listed look like pretty decent schools: not too expensive, decent acceptance rate, nice location, and a over-all good education.

Thank you all so much! I really appreciate your taking the time to answer my question! :)

And Devonte, that looks really cool!!! I wish you good luck!! Feel free to msg me sometime! :):)

What about Macaulay Honors College? If I get a 30 on the ACT, do you guys think I have even the slightest shot at that??

Bump!!! :)

According to my Naviance, 30 is the average ACT for Macaulay Honors.

Here’s my Junior schedule (I just got it last night)

Honors English III
Honors Spanish III
Algebra II
Honors Anatomy and Physiology
AP European History

Keep in mind that no one in my class will have more than one AP for their junior year. This is the most rigorous courseload available to me, with the exception of math. My GC won’t let me into honors math because I got a C last year. Is this okay for the schools I listed, maybe even for Macaulay Honors?

BTW, does anyone have an opinion on CUNY Staten Island?

And thank you yankessfanatic! :)

Ew how dare you even think about CSI.

The dorm construction ruins the campus, whenever I have to go I have to walk all the way around it weohcarsgfnk.

My friends are all completely misguided - they all want to go to Macaulay JUST because they get a free Macbook.
