i know sats good, gpa bad, im over it now

need an idea on what school to apply to,?
i wouldnt mind engineering, buisness, or medical school any schools?
thanks !

Well first, don't apply to a top 20 school just because of the name, but I know I won't take that advice either. I think you'll need to break your GPA down with grades for each year on here before I can really predict what "top 20" school would take you. Not that I'm nearly as qualified as others on here to predict where you'll be accepted. But... what do you want to do in life?

no. top 20 schools dun like slackers. and your sat is nothing special. gpa probably is like 3.8 weighted.

really i thought my sat was pretty good........... i have no A"s on my transcript not a single one are you sure it wold be a 3.8?

Don't listen to him. Based on his comment about your SAT score, he is obviously inane.

Is there a specific region of the country you're interested in applying to?

I live in CA, so I'll just give you some suggestions from around here (if your GPA is around a 3.8):

Harvey Mudd
Pomona College
California Institute of Technology
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Santa Clara University
Stanford
USC
UC's - although some might be a reach for you

what kind of courses did you take? all honor/AP courses? how challenging was your courseload compared to other people in your class? that all makes a difference too

and that 2330 is not a "nothing special" SAT score, LOL - even at top schools. 2330!? one of my best friends got into harvard with a 2100... and i'm pretty sure 2330 puts him at many top schools at the 75%, at the least... you DO know that only about 200-300 kids got a perfect 2400, right? a 2330 is just a few problem(s) difference...

my best advice is... have one or two safties you wouldn't mind. and then apply to all reach schools + a few matches, because you never know - they may need to fufill their "SAT" quota and see your score and jump at the chance to boost their average SAT, even just a little. if you have an excellent essay, and decent recs... all the better :)

when it comes to courseloads ive taken all hard classes

all ap/honors classes for my cores

senior year its like 5 ap's

ive also taken spanish ap if that helps? (spanish for 4 years)

my gpa is 83 weighted
and 81 unweighted so i dont know how that translates over to the scale

Daniel_S learn to read. He asked about top 20 schools. Ok, lets name a few in the top 20 that I think you have no chance at even with good essays. Come on. You have no As and a good sat score, but for the top 20? 2330 isn't so special.
I'm just going to tell you what I think.

1.Stanford
2. Harvard
3. Mit
4. Yale
5. Princeton
6. Columbia
7. Dartmouth
8. UPenn
9. Brown

Look past the top 20. I could easily name 9 that you have almost no chance at. The other 11 may be just reaches rather than near impossibles, which is basically still just a small chance. Try for some lower state schools. If you are in California and have a bit of luck, you may get into Berkeley or UCLA, both decent schools in the top 30 or so. Lower your goals to top 50 and then you will have many schools to select from.

I am assuming you are not an underrepresented minority, incredibly poor, suffered great hardship, have parents in politics, connections etc. I am assuming you are the average joe.

Well if your heart is set on the top 20, apply to a ****load and pray. Personally, I think have lower chances than me since you never got an A before and you have a lower SAT. I do not think I have much of a chance at the top 10 and only a small one at the top 20. I don't mean to discourage you, but look to the top 30 and top 40. Those are teh schools where you will have a realistic chance.

"you DO know that only about 200-300 kids got a perfect 2400, right? a 2330 is just a few problem(s) difference..." -precocious

More than 200-300. More like 400-500. There are literally thousands with scores higher htan 2330. Keep in mind, most top colleges do not care about SATs that much in admissions. As long as you do not have something terrible, its not important. I hate that fact. I wish college admissions were 100% test based then I would be in every college.

hmm top 20 seem slike a slim to none chance your right , disregaurd top 20, i just need soem schools to apply to, also i live in TEXAS........

ouch. then UCs are not that good an option for you. Try uhhh that texas state school and like just ok colleges like carnegie mellon, boston university. Those are pretty realisitc and if you feel adventurous, throw in harvard and stanford, but I wouldn't recommmend applying to like all the Ivies and mit, caltech and stanford. Chance of getting in is tiny, but if its your dream no ones stopping you. Maybe you should apply to a couple of super reaches like harvard just for fun.

i was never planning on applying to harvard yale or princeton they all have cut off gpas i think. nor do i want to attend those schools i was shooting for a lower ivy like

cornell
or maybe rice?

and i have gaurnteed admission at A&M

UT i think ill be able to get in i hope anyways heh.

clueless07:

UCB/UCLA: Reach (out of state, Engineering)

mm.. i think ur SAT score is FABULOUS i mean like i, myself, cant even get it up to 2300.anyways.the fact that u have no As.!!would probably hurt ur chanceees.Alot.period.

One of the Top 20 for sure

Texas locale is a plus to apply to the top northeast schools, its not like Kansas or Montana - however a plus, for example much better than going to high school in (overrepresented areas) such NY, NJ, MA and so forth

The regular Ivy's will have many applicants like you, and many with similar scores and most with high GPAs and extraordinary ECs - so its hard to tell

The real question you have to ask yourself - where do you (if anywhere) want to use your Early Decision card

You look like a very strong candidate for Amherst College binding ED, which is a top if not the top small liberal arts college in the United States,l great for pre-med among other things, binding ED due I believe by November 15th with a decision by December 15th, which is clearly one of the top small liberal arts colleges in the country. Amherst from what I hear doesn't have interviews per se, but they have tours

Obviously if admitted, you would have to withdraw other applications, but its not like you are a strong candidate for Harvard, Yale, or Princeton- despite your (in normal terms) outstanding record

Your scores represent precisely the raw intellectual firepower that can eventually get you into medical school down the road (if that's your interest), and if you go in strong on your reasons why you are focused on one college (whether Amherst) or whatever), and work it out as a possible pre-med or something else, and convey this focus on your application, they will see it - despite moderate GPA's - and this will give you an edge.

You also might be a possible for MIT if engineering is your focus.

Harvard has a cutoff GPA? Hmm?

MIT....

No offense, but this guy hardly has a chance at Berkeley engineering. Test scores dun mean jack squat to MIT. They would much rather take a USAMO participant than a 2400 in my opinion.

I dun doubt taht the OP is smart. his scores show he is fairly above average, but he has been lazier tahn average as well. Well lazier than CC average not US average. Try rice and cornell. You have a slim shot, but way more than MIT...

Mudd will like you...as long as you leave your slacking off in HS. They'll either whip you into shape or you'll drop out. You want a really superior education in math/science/engineering?

BTW, fastMEd, Mudd IS a top 20 school. Don't even try to argue it. I'll pull some per capita facts out of my hat to blow away anything you can put up against it.

Late. There's a party in the back hall...

He means Harvard has a de facto cutoff GPA for OVERrepresented minorities (and whites) - which the elite colleges are still trying to figure a litigation-free way to cap their admissions - so they can expand their URM color-coded admittees

In any case it doesn't matter, because he's not a good candidate for Harvard anyways - he has GPA problems plus his EC's are very light by Harvard standards

Not to be rude, but his chances at Amherst or any other top college do not seem very high unless he's got exceptional reason for that GPA. How could he possibly be a "very strong candidate"? You strongly underestimate Amherst's selectivity.

is darthmouth out of the question? i heard they have a good pre-med school :-) grays anatomy ftw
