@PurpleTitan yeah…I kind of applied to a wide range of different schools just because I don’t know exactly what I want yet. Nearly all of them are reputable for business. Some are in the city (which is a pro but also a con), a lot have a good overall college life, etc. Some are in CA b/c I want to live in CA. I am applying to Santa Clara, Bucknell, Pepperdine, George Washington, NYU (low reaches/matches) b/c not only are they good for business, but they also have a higher percentage of people w/GPAs of 3.25-3.49 than other goods schools for business so I can have a better chance of getting accepted
would you say they are reachy with my potential stats?
If you are training at the senior level while attending the state school, that might mean you need to take a lower course load. Part time students usually can’t live in the dorms. Are you going to be looking for rinks and coaches at all your possible schools? That could complicate things.
18 hours per week of sports training off campus is a huge distraction from school.
@AroundHere exactly, intense training is why i need a gap year and why I didn’t apply to the safety school that I actually would be happy going to (not naming the safety b/c of privacy reasons, but the closest ice rink is 1 hour away from campus). It would be very nice to have a fs club or ice rink in proximity to the school, but is not completely necessary.
Miami University of Oxford, Ohio has a good business school and a rink on campus (even if you’re not seriously training at that time, fun to have nearby.)
I’m worried about the family situation. If you did get into one of your reachy schools that’s more than 15 min. away, would your mom let you go? I’m guessing that if she won’t let you be at an ice rink without her, she’s going to have a big problem letting you go away to school. Have you sat down with her to be sure she would let you actually go to the schools on your list?
she comes to the rink with me so I can work hard in practice and “be the best”, so I can go to a good school that I would be happy going to. That’s her theory
A few other schools to consider that would be somewhat less reachy include Skidmore ( has business, rink in town is open July to March), Macalester (no businesss, but SPFSC is close and on a bus line), and Colorado College (no business, but there is a rink on campus).
I’m confused then: in post 15, you can’t go to your safety school because your mom will follow you to the ice rink, but now you say in post 23 you won’t be doing serious training while in college?
Being committed to a sport looks good on an application, but the specific level of award you win won’t make much difference. You aren’t going to be a recruitable athlete as a skater.
OH and 1 thing that I forgot to mention: I am applying to SCU early, which is one of my match schools. If I get in, then there is no need for me to apply to any more match/low reaches besides the schools I listed on here b/c i’d be so happy if I got in, it’s truly a great school socially and academically. If I get deferred/rejected, I plan on applying to a few more safeties just to be safe. That should solve the problem of not having enough match schools, as several people stated earlier.
@AroundHere If I go to my safety school, I will be doing at least some amount of training since there are so many rinks in proximity to it. even if I don’t do serious training, she will be there with me
@inthegarden, well with those stats, she wasn’t getting merit money from any of those schools that were reachy for her anyway even if she got in, so I’m assuming her family is fine with being full-pay everywhere.
To the OP: I would spent more time researching schools and more importantly, figuring yourself out and where you want to be/what you want to be rather than doing things in a bid to impress people. College isn’t a destination, it’s a step on a journey (and available in many ways at many stages; such as Columbia GS or HES, for instance). So given that, would you drop skating if there was no college?
@PurpleTitan I would have to drop skating pretty soon, since people tend to get worse as they age especially in their early 20s/late teens (im at my peak rignt now). but I would not stop coaching
Ds freshman roommate had a mom who would show up all the time. She did her daughter’s laundry and hung out in the dorm room when she was at class. Caused lots of issues between all three roommates needless to say.
^literally the other day when I was talking to my mom she was like “if you go to [safety] then I’ll bring you korean food and u don’t have to do the laundry.” can u not
@camwow Bucknell is not reachy for full pay low gpa ED applicants – yes, I am generalizing – not sorry. It is not rigorous IF that is what you are used to. I think you need a plane ride between you and your mom if you want to temporarily spread your wings.
@EmptyNessa I hope I am not coming across as rich lol, because I do need at least some fin aid. It’s just that since I get 15k every year I go to college (mom works at a university which provides tuition assistance), I don’t need as much as most middle class people do.
