I was talking to a friend of mine about my plans to defer. She was admitted to an ivy but desperately wants to go to HYP so she said she was going to hold her place at the ivy she got into and reapply to Harvard and Yale and apply to Princeton (because she didn’t this year). I was just wondering if you could actually do that? like it’s definitely unethical but is it illegal per se?
I don’t know about illegal, but it is against the rules. So if she were to follow that strategy, she risks not only getting rejected from HYP, but having her original acceptance to the other ivy withdrawn.
What do you mean reapply? I want to transfer to HYP and I know that is difficult but how could I make this a possibility?
" I was just wondering if you could actually do that?"
Uh, no. The Ivy that she was admitted to , and who presumable she has informed she wants to take a “gap year”
will find out . And then her acceptance will be revoked . The other Ivys will deep 6 her application.
She needs to “settle” for the Ivy she got into.
No eyes will weep for her…
Put it this way: her revoked spot will make a graduate of the class of 2016 very happy since an unexpected slot will have opened. Your friend is nuts – and exhibits some of the worst of the worst prestige-chasing we’ve seen on this site.
Not to mention your “friend’s” teachers and guidance counselor, if they were worth their salt, would run away from her screaming into the night. Once HYP gets wind of her scamming the first Ivy school, they would have some very hard questions to the GC on why he/she would be complicit in trying to scam their fellow university. Please tell us this “friend” is actually a real person and not your pseudonym, right?
@ibbi1824: Let’s bring some reality to this discussion:
A student accepts a spot at a college, but decides to take a gap year. At the end of their senior year, the guidance counselor must still send their final high school transcript off to the college the student will matriculate to. That’s true even if the student decides to take a gap year. And the guidance counselor/high school must maintain a record of the student’s high school file, as well as the college they matriculated to.
Now, during the student’s gap year, they decide to reapply to HYP – but as part of the application, the student needs to ask two high school teachers for recommendations and their guidance counselor to submit a Secondary School Report (SSR) on their behalf, and to submit their high school transcript to HYP.
I would think the chances are VERY high that one of the teacher recommendations would comment about the student being accepted to such and such a college last year. And if the teachers didn’t mention it, the guidance counselor – who doesn’t want the high school to be black listed by any of the colleges – is going to mention the fact in their Secondary School Report to HYP. And, because the GC doesn’t want their high school to be back listed by the college the student originally matriculated to, but is now taking a gap year from, they are probably going to alert that college, as well.
Meanwhile, the student needs to submit essays to HYP – and they best explain what they’ve been doing for the past year if their transcript says they’ve already graduated high school!
So, in theory – yes – a student could reapply to HYP after being admitted to another college, but the chances of HYP, as well as the college they matriculated to, but are now taking a gap year from, finding out are pretty high. So high that a student should think very carefully before torpedoing their entire college career over such a boneheaded move.
@T26E4 no no of course not, it’s someone at my school (she’s not on CC) who also applied to the US. It’s been awhile since we had this conversation and she’s now decided to stay here in the UK because of some family stuff
@lakers2424 Princeton doesn’t take transfers…
If you believe this is wrong
then why would this even matter
wow, just wow.
What Ivy is it that your “friend” doesn’t want to go to? Why she apply if she wasn’t interested in going?
@albert69 Cornell and tbh i didn’t ask her the intricacies of why she applied where she did. A couple of days after Ivy decisions day, her mother was diagnosed with a serious illness (which i was made aware early this morning and won’t go into the details of) so she decided to stay in the UK. I’d really appreciate it if we could put the matter to rest now.
@gibby you might be right for some schools but at mine you just ask the guidance office to send the dame package and it gets sent…my gc even told me to deposit at one school apply to others
@dvgbhs Your parents should inform your principal of the completely unethical advice your GC is giving to students and families. It’ll come back to bite your school – and rightly so
Then your gc is running the risk of colleges finding out and black-listing your high school. In any case, you’re still going to have to explain why you are took a GAP year, and what’ve been doing with your time, as your transcript will show you’ve already graduated high school. And, as HYP all keep an electronic record of an applicants file for 3 years, every admissions office will have access to your original application, along with your essays, teacher recommendations and gc’s Secondary School Report.
